St. Edward's beats Metro State to win South Central Regional title

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Nationally ranked and unbeaten St. Edward's University was perfect in a penalty kick shootout to claim the South Central Regional title over Metro State University in a NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Tournament contest on Friday, Nov. 22, at Orca Field on the campus of Whatcom CC.

The contest was tied 1-1 after regulation and overtime before St. Edward's claimed a 3-0 triumph in penalty kicks, with Megan Anderson slotting the decisive kick inside the left post.

The Hilltoppers, who are ranked 10th nationally and improved to 19-0-2, will play a national quarterfinal Sunday at 2 p.m. against the West Regional champion which will be determined later this evening in a game between host Western Washington and Cal State University San Bernardino.

Metro State completed its season 14-5-3.

St. Edward's advanced despite being outshot in the game, 15-5. The Hilltoppers had just one shot attempt in the opening half, but it gave them a 1-0 halftime lead as Mikayla Engel stepped in front of an attempted Metro State clearance, controlled the ball and fired a shot into the left side of the goal from 14 yards out in the 12th minute.

Metro State equalized in the 78th minute. Karisa Price beat a defender to the end line left of the goal, and cut the ball back for Nicole Pollack, who finished from nine yards.

There were just three shot attempts in overtime, all in a span of about 40 seconds of the 108th minute by Metro State. But one shot was blocked, and St. Edward's goalkeeper Lorrie Santoy made a pair of point-blank saves, forcing overtime.

Santoy, who entered the contest at halftime, had seven saves, and added another stop in the penalty shootout.
