Dec. 9, 2008
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University women's soccer defender Katie Warner has been named a first-team All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Warner, a senior from Burlington (graduate of Burlington-Edison High School), led the Vikings to a 17-3-2 record and the championship game of the NCAA Division II Far West Regional where they lost 1-0 in overtime to eventual national champion Seattle Pacific. "This is an outstanding honor for a player that deserves every bit of it," said Western coach Travis Connell. "We relied on her talent and leadership all year. She consistently made the big play defensively when we needed it. I am very happy for her." Warner helped Western hold the opposition to an average of 0.73 goals per game and register seven shutouts. She also scored one goal and had one assist. The Vikings had a 16-game unbeaten streak (14-0-2), their longest since 1986. During that string they defeated Seattle Pacific, 1-0, and tied the Falcons, 0-0 in overtime. Western's 17 victories were a school record. |
