WWU's Levin debuts with three-hit 1-0 shutout over Saint Martin's

KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii - Freshman pitcher Alexie Levin (Everett) made her collegiate debut with a three-hit shutout as Western Washington University blanked Saint Martin's University, 1-0, Saturday in second-day action at the University of Hawaii Hilo Kona Kickoff Classic Invitational Tournament.

Earlier in the day, outfielder Camille Depew (Sr., Seattle/Seattle Lutheran) drove in four runs on three hits as the Vikings defeated host University of Hawaii Hilo, 9-7.

WWU improved to 3-1with the two wins.

In the second game, Levin gave up just two singles, both runners being eliminated on double plays, and one double to lead off the fifth. Levin responded to that with two ground outs sandwiched around a strikeout.

In all, Levin struck out three and did not issue a walk, retiring 10 straight during one stretch.

Sam Munger got the loss for Saint Martin's despite giving up just three hits. She had both singles for the Saints.

The Vikings scored the game's only run in the third. Emma Blauser (Fr., Federal Way/Todd Beamer) walked, advanced to second on a single by Depew and to third on a sacrifice bunt by Kristen Allen (Sr., Arlington). Blauser scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Levin.

In the first game, Depew had a three-run double in the bottom of the third inning as the Vikings scored five times for a 9-2 lead. She also singled in a run as WWU scored four runs in the second.

The Vikings' Jackie Rothenberger (Sr., Coquitlam, B.C.) had a two-run single in the four-run uprising and Cheyenne Best (So., Big Lake/Sedro-Woolley) singled in both frames. She and Depew each scored two runs.

WWU pitcher Jenna DeRosier (Jr., Kelso) improved to 2-1, not allowing an earned run despite giving up 12 hits. UHH scored five runs in the fifth, three on a home run by Collette Black.

On Sunday, WWU meets Rollins FL at 10 a.m. HT and host Hawaii Hilo at 12:30 p.m.
