Vikings close MSUB Desert Stinger with 10-3 win over Black Hills State

LAS VEGAS, Nevada - Alexie Levin (Fr., Everett) was 2-for-4, driving in four runs and scoring two, as Western Washington University defeated Black Hills State University, 10-3, at the fourth annual Montana State University Billings Desert Stinger Softball Tournament which ended Sunday at Majestic Park.

The Vikings finished 4-1 in the three-day tourney and improved to 7-6 overall. BHSU has yet to in five games this season.

Levin hit a bases-loaded double, driving in three runs as WWU scored five in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 6-1 lead. She also had a run-scoring single in the Vikings' two-run third.

Haylee Baker (Jr., Poulsbo/Bainbridge) and Jackie Rothenberger (Sr., Coquitlam, B.C.) each drove in two runs for WWU, Baker with a two-run double in the fifth. Scoring four runs for the Vikings was Kristen Allen (Sr., Arlington), who singled, walked twice and reached base on an error.

Ryan Cook accounted for all three BHSU runs, hitting a two-run homer in the fourth after having a single in the first and scoring on a double by Erico Everso.

Levin pitched the last five innings for WWU to earn the win (3-2), giving up six hits and striking out five.

In the five tournament games, Levin hit .474 (9-for-19) with five extra-base hits (four doubles and a triple), driving in 10 runs and scoring seven. She had a 2-0 pitching record and a 2.74 earned run average.

Baker and Allen each hit .571 (8-for-14), Allen scoring 10 runs. Rothenberger hit .438 (7-for-16) and drove in 10 runs, having three doubles and one home run.

The Vikings opened tourney play Friday with wins over Fort Lewis, 18-2 in five innings, and UC-Colorado Springs, 9-2. On Saturday, they rallied for a 3-2 victory over Chadron State before losing to Grand Canyon, 13-9 in eight innings.

WWU has an 11-day break before its home opener on Thursday, Feb. 21 (1 p.m.) against University of British Columbia at Viking Field.
