RICHLAND, Wash. -
Liza Teichler (Sr., Sammamish/Skyline) doubled in the winning run and Jessica Rosencrants (Jr., Sequim) pitched a four-hit shutout as Western Washington University defeated host Central Washington University, 1-0 in eight innings, in second-day action Friday at the 13th annual CWU Invitational Softball Tournament being played at the Columbia Playfields.
The Vikings fell 3-2 to Montana State University Billings later in the day, dropping to 6-4 overall. They are 2-2 at the tourney which runs through Sunday.
Western had gone 15 innings without scoring a run before they got one in the top of the eighth against Central.
Western's Kelsey Anderson (Fr., Mount Vernon) was placed at second in accordance with the tiebreaker rule. Samantha Rutherford (Fr., Kenmore/Inglemoor) sacrificed her to third and she scored on Teichler's double.
It was the second shutout of the young season for Rosencrants, who upped her record to 4-2. She struck out 10, the last one with runners on first and third and two out in the bottom of the eighth.
During one stretch, Rosencrants retired 14 straight.
Linse Vlahovich (0-5) was the hard-luck losing pitcher for Central, which fell to 2-7. She gave up just five hits, struck out three and walked one, retiring 12 in a row during one stretch.
Vlahovich worked out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the sixth and a two-on, two-out situation in the seventh.
Western pitcher Emily Hardin (Fr., Bothell/Inglemoor) gave up three runs, two earned, in 1-2/3 innings against MSUB as she got the loss to even her record at 1-1.
The Yellowjackets, who improved to 3-6, scored one run in the bottom of the first, helped by two Western errors, and got two more in the second on a run-scoring double by Leslie Davis and a two-out, RBI-single by Shay Oberg.
Jennifer Jorgensen (So., Bellingham/Meridian) pitched 4-1/3 innings of scoreless relief for the Vikings.
Western scored once in the second as Rutherford singled and scored on a two-out single by Caitlin Dotlich (Fr., Sedro-Woolley/Burlington-Edision). The Vikings got one more in the fourth when Michelle Wrigley (Fr., Bothell/Inglemoor) was hit by a pitch and scored on a double by Meghan Flem (So., Hood River, OR/Hood River Valley).
MSUB pitcher Rebekah Tsatsa (2-1) went the distance, scattering four hits and striking out four.
The Vikings meet Western Oregon University (11:15 a.m.) and Northwest Nazarene University (2 p.m.) on Saturday.
