March 4, 2005
RICHLAND, Wash. - Western Washington University opened its season by winning one of three games in first-day action Friday at the 10th annual Central Washington Invitational Softball Tournament being played on the Columbia Playfields.
The victory came in game two when outfielder Megan McPhee (Sr., Anacortes) drove in three runs, including two in a seven-run eighth inning, as the Vikings prevailed 9-2 over Northwest Nazarene.
McPhee got things going for Western in the fourth inning when she singled and later scored on a throwing error to tie the score at 1-1. After the Crusaders scored in the fifth inning to take a 2-1 lead, McPhee tied the score again with a solo home run to right field - the fifth of her career.
In the eighth inning, McPhee's two-run single was the big blow in the Vikings' seven-run rally. Krisann Beardemphl (Fr., University Place/Curtis) and Rachel Ellis (Jr., Pleasant Hill, CA) also drove in runs with a single and ground out, respectively.
McPhee finished the game 3-for-4 with three runs batted in and three runs scored, and Nicole Walker (So., Kenmore/Juanita) was 2-for-4.
Western pitcher Jackie Quint (So., Silverdale/Central Kitsap) (1-0) got the win with three scoreless relief innings. Stephanie Sheppard (Jr., Camas/Lower Columbia CC) worked the first five innings for the Vikings.
In the first game, the Vikings fell 3-2 in nine innings to Montana State-Billings.
MSUB pitcher Joey Ehnes (4-3), who had a 15-strikeout, complete-game victory, drove in Stephanie Cochrun with what proved to be the winning run in the top of the ninth on a one-out double down the leftfield line. Cochrun had been placed at second to begin the inning in accordance with the international tie-breaker rule.
In the bottom of the ninth, Western got the potential tying run to third, but Beardemphl was tagged out on an attempted squeeze bunt that failed. Ehnes tripled home the Yellowjackets' first run in the seventh, and later scored on a single by Cami Rainey to tie the game at 2-2, sending it into extra innings.
Walker blanked MSUB for six innings, striking out 10, before giving up the two runs in the seventh. Sheppard (0-1) pitched the last two innings and picked up the loss.
Western took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second as Beardemphl walked and scored on a two-out double by Ellis.
The Vikings scored another run in the fifth when Courtney Walton (So., Chesapeake, VA (Great Bridge) hit a leadoff single and eventually scored on a two-out infield single by Mandy Kaestner (Jr., Coeur d'Alene).
Kaestner was the only Western player with two hits in the game.
In game three, the Vikings scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the fifth inning without getting a hit. Central scored once in the first and three times in the fourth, one on a double by Kelli Spaulding.
Third baseman Adrienne Moore (Sr., Lake Forest Park/Shorecrest) got Western's only hit off Central pitcher Sara Badgley (3-3), a leadoff single in the second. Badgley struck out 13 in getting the complete game victory.
Quint (1-1), who also went the distance, got the loss for Western.
The Vikings play three more times Saturday, facing Saint Martin's at 8:30 a.m., Seattle U. at 1 p.m. and Western Oregon at 5:30 p.m.
