BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Pitcher Anisa Wingsness (Fr., North Bend/Mount Si) tossed a two-hit shutout as Western Washington University blanked Montana State University Billings, 7-0, in the nightcap of a Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball doubleheader that began Wednesday and ended Thursday at Viking Field.
WWU is now 9-7 overall and 1-1 on league play. MSUB is 4-8 overall and 3-2 in conference action.
Wingsness (2-3) allowed just a leadoff bunt single to Emily Osborn in the top of the fifth and a two-out double to Brittney Sanders in the seventh. Wingsness struck out one and did not issue a walk.
Camille Depew (Sr., Seattle/Seattle Lutheran) gave WWU a 1-0 lead in the second when she tripled and scored on a single by Kristen Allen (Sr., Arlington). Alexie Levin (Fr., Everett) hit a two-run homer in the third after Allen singled, and Kaleigh Keating (Jr., Salinas, CA/Notre Dame Salinas) tripled in the fourth and scored on a wild pitch for a 4-0 advantage.
The Vikings also scored three runs in the sixth inning. Depew singled, stole second and third, and scored on an error; and Rachelle Berry (Sr., Alger/Burlington-Edison) and Lauren Bennett (Fr., Tustin CA/Beckman) each had run-scoring singles.
MSUB took the first game 5-3 after it resumed after four innings Wednesday with the score tied at 3-3. Emily Osborn hit a two-out, two-run homer over the right-field fence in the top of the fifth and pitcher Amanda Todd (2-0) retired nine of the 10 batters she faced for the complete-game victory. Todd struck out nine, walked four and allowed six hits.
On Wednesday, WWU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Depew had a lead-off single, advanced to third on a passed ball and ground out and scored on a double by Levin.
MSUB scored three runs in the top of the fourth. Nicole Wilkerson doubled across one run, Osborn came home on a wild pitch and Breanna Wilson drove in the other run with a sacrifice fly.
The Vikings tied the game with two runs in the fourth. Jackie Rothenberger (Sr., Coquitlam, BC) led off with a triple and scored on a two-out single by Depew. Allen then singled across Cheyenne Best (So., Big Lake/Sedro-Woolley), who had walked earlier.
The MSUB contests were the first of a six-game WWU home stand. The Vikings entertain Northwest Nazarene on Friday, March 8 (1 p.m.) and Central Washington on Saturday, March 9 (12 noon).
