WWU collects 21 hits, sweeps Northwest Nazarene, 4-1 and 6-2

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Three Western Washington University pitchers allowed just three runs and Camille Depew (Sr., Seattle/Seattle Lutheran) led a 21-hit attack with four safeties as the Vikings swept a doubleheader with Northwest Nazarene University, 4-1 and 6-2, in Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball action Friday at Viking Field on the WWU campus. WWU, which has won eight of its last 10 games, improved to 11-7 overall and 3-1 in league action. NNU fell to 5-13 overall and is winless in three conference contests. In the opener, WWU pitcher Jenna DeRosier (Jr., Kelson) allowed just three hits in upping her record to 5-2. She walked three and struck out one. Three of the Vikings' four runs were unearned. WWU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Depew got to third when her fly ball to left field was dropped and scored on a sacrifice bunt by Kristen Allen (Sr., Arlington). In the fourth, Jackie Rothenberger (Sr., Coquitlam, BC) led off with a double and scored on a two-bagger by Cheyenne Best (So., Big Lake/Sedro-Woolley). Allie Crowe (So., Auburn/Jefferson) brought in another run with a sacrifice fly. The Vikings' fourth run came in the fifth. Alexie Levin (Fr., Everett) singled, went to third on a throwing error and scored on a fielder's choice. NNU's only run came in the top half of the fourth. Baylee Jollife singled and scored on a one-out single by Kira Varady. Crusader pitcher Noelle Wright (5-10) gave up just one earned run. In the nightcap, Depew was 3-for-4, driving in three runs and scoring two. She tallied WWU's first run in the fifth, doubled in two runs in the Vikings' four-run second and singled across another run in the fifth. Levin also had a two-run double for WWU in the second. Kaleigh Keating (Jr., Salinas, CA/Notre Dame Salinas) had three hits for the Vikings, and Allen, Levin and Haylee Baker (Jr., Poulsbo/Bainbridge) each had two. Anisa Wingsness (Fr., North Bend/Mount Si) worked the first five innings for WWU, evening her record at 3-3. Lauren Bennett (Fr., Tustin, CA/Beckman) provided two scoreless innings of relief. The Crusaders scored their two runs in the fourth. Besides Depew's four hits in the two games, Keating, Allen and Levin each had three. Levin and Allen are each working on 10-game hitting streaks, and Rothenberger has hit in nine straight. WWU completes its six-game home stand Saturday (12 noon), March 9, against Central Washington University. |
