BELLINGHAM, Wash. - A furious seventh-inning rally fell short in the opener as Western Washington University dropped both games, 5-4 and 7-1, to Central Washington University in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Sunday at Viking Field on the WWU campus.

The Vikings fell to 5-7, all of their contests being GNAC counters. They are 1-7 at home this season.

Central improved to 10-4 overall and remained atop the conference standings at 10-2. It was the third ever series sweep over Western by the Wildcats, the other two being two-game sets.

Trailing 5-0 in the opener, the Vikings rallied for four runs and had the bases loaded with two outs before reliever Katrina Reime came in and got the final out for her second save of the series.

All the damage came with two outs as Meghan Flem (Sr., Hood River, OR/Hood River Valley) hit a two-run double and the Central center fielder misjudged a fly ball allowing two more runs to score. Winning pitcher Lauren Hadenfeld (6-1), who had allowed just two singles through the first 6-2/3 innings, then walked two batters before Reime closed out the game.

The Wildcats' Samantha Petrich opened the scoring with a lead-off home run in the fourth. Christyne Alley had a two-run single in the sixth and Central plated two more runs in the seventh on a throwing error.

In the second game, Central scored three unearned runs in the second and Kelsey Haupert blasted a three-run homer in the fifth, upping her season totals to five home runs and 25 runs batted in. She had three home runs and 10 RBI in the four-game series.

The Wildcats' Danielle Monson also drove in three runs on three hits in the game. She had a two-run single in the second and a run-scoring single in the sixth.

Western's only run came in the third when Karli Baumgartner (Jr., Silverdale/Central Kitsap) led off with a single, stole second and scored on a double by Jordan Emmil (So., Colville).

Lindy Baxter (3-3) went the distance for the Wildcats, giving up 10 hits.

Flem was 3-for-3 in the game and led the Vikings with four hits in the two contests. Central had 19 hits on the day.

Western travels to Saint Martin's for GNAC doubleheaders on Saturday (12 noon) and Sunday (12 noon).
