BELLINGHAM, Wash. - The Western Washington University softball put on a display of hitting, fielding and pitching in a doubleheader sweep of Saint Martin's University, 6-1 and 8-0, Sunday afternoon in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action at Viking Field.

The doubleheader sweep of the Saints moves the Vikings to 12-6 overall and 5-3 in GNAC play. Saint Martin's entered the game in first place in the GNAC, but dropped three of four games on its road trip to fall to 9-5 overall and 5-3 in conference play.

Pitchers Anna Kasner (Fr., Milton, WA/Fife) and Shearyna Labasan (So., Mililani, HI/Maryknoll) combined to allow just 6 hits and one run combined in the doubleheader, with each recording complete-game victories.

The offense carved out 14 runs on 17 hits in the two games, with freshman Paityn Cyr (Mount Vernon, WA) and junior Emily Benson (West Richland, WA/Kamiakin) each hitting a pair of home runs. Benson, WWU's all-time home run leader, went 3-for-4 with a double, 2 home runs, 3 walks and 5 RBI in the doubleheader. Cyr, who has hit a home run in three of her last four games, went 2-for-7 with 5 RBI.

The defense was flawless in the field in 51 total chances, extending a streak of four consecutive games without an error.

"It was an excellent performance all around for us today," said head coach Amy Suiter. "Pitching and defense, especially our defensive shifts. We worked all week on situational and gap-to-gap hitting, and today I think you saw that."

The Vikings return to action tomorrow hosting Central Washington in a doubleheader starting at 1 pm at Viking Field on the WWU campus.
