Western blanks Saint Martin's, 8-0, in home debut
March 20, 2004
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Nicole Walker (Fr., Kenmore/Juanita) pitched a two-hit shutout and third baseman Adrienne Moore (Jr., Lake Forest Park/Shorecrest) drove in four runs as Western Washington University blanked Saint Martin's College, 8-0, in the first game of a Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Saturday at Viking Field.
Western, making its first home appearance of the season, improved to 7-3 overall and 2-1 league. The Vikings ended the game in the bottom of the sixth inning via the eight-run mercy rule on a run-scoring single by Dani Deyette (Sr., Olympia).
Walker, who has won four of five decisions this year, allowed just two hits, a two-out single by Mallory McNicholas in the second and a one-out double by Heather Sankey in the third. Sankey was the only Saints' base runner to get past first.
Moore hit a two-out three-run homer in the first and plated another run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth. The home run was her first of the season and upped her career total to 10, two short of the school record.
Megan McPhee (Jr., Anacortes), who was 3-for-3, had a run-scoring single in the second. Having two hits for the Vikings, besides McPhee, were Dani Deyette (Sr., Olympia), who drove in two runs, Cortney Walton (Fr., Chesapeake, VA) and Ashley Barber (So., Camas).
Saint Martin's fell to 4-12 overall and 1-6 league.
