Western blanked in opener at Sonoma State
March 22, 2006
ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - Western Washington University pitcher Jackie Quint (Jr., Silverdale/Central Kitsap) gave up just two runs, but for the third straight outing got little or no run support as the Vikings fell 2-0 to Sonoma State University in the opener of a non-league softball doubleheader Wednesday.
Western, which fell to 6-11, managed just two hits off Sonoma State's Isabel Banales, who evened her record at 7-7 with the complete-game victory. She struck out six, walked two and hit one batter.
The Seawolves, who improved to 8-17, scored the game's only runs in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs, Stephanie Azevedo and Heather Sanders each singled, and following a wild pitch, both scored on single by Heather James.
Western's hits were both doubles. Mandy Harvey (Sr., Coeur d'Alene, ID/Lake City) had one in the first and Amanda Shiflet (Fr., Stanwood) got the other in the fifth when the Vikings loaded the bases with two outs before Banales got out of the jam with a strikeout.
Quint went the distance for Western, scattering six hits, striking out four and walking one. The Vikings have scored just one run in her last three appearances and have gotten just two hits in her last two outings.
The game is the third of eight slated for Western during its week-long road trip to northern California. The Vikings split a twinbill at nationally No.15-ranked San Francisco State University on Tuesday.
