BILLINGS, Mont. -
Despite a big day at the plate by shortstop Haylee Baker (Sr., Poulsbo/Bainbridge), Western Washington University gave up early leads in losing both games of a softball doubleheader at Montana State University Billings, 10-5 and 5-4, in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action Saturday.
Baker was 4-for-8 with two homers, driving in five runs and scoring two as the Vikings fell to 11-8 overall and 3-5 in GNAC play. MSUB, making its first home appearance of the season, improved to 9-10 overall and 4-6 in conference action.
WWU took a 4-2 lead in the second game on a two-out, two-run shot over the left-field fence by Baker, her fifth home run of the season, tying her for the team lead.
But MSUB scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, the last two both being unearned for the come-from-behind victory. Jessyka MacDonald (4-2) pitched the complete-game victory, the only Viking base runner in the last three innings reaching on an error.
Baker had a run-scoring single in WWU's two-run second.
MSUB's Hali Gruntowicz tied the game at 2-2 with a two-run homer in the bottom of that frame and brought the Yellowjackets within one, 4-3, on a two-out single in the fourth.
In the first contest, MSUB used two five-run rallies in the third and fourth innings to take a 10-2 lead. Four of its runs in the third were unearned.
Alexie Levin (So., Everett) gave WWU an early 1-0 lead in the second with a leadoff homer, her fifth. Baker had a two-run blast in the seventh.
Mary Grace Bywater (4-1) was credited with the win for the Yellowjackets.
The Vikings' Meghan Carrillo (Sr., Prunedale, CA/North Monterey County) was 5-for-7 in the two games, raising her batting average to .444 (16-of-36).
WWU's Autumn Isaacson (Jr., Lake Stevens) continued her string of reaching base in every game this season.
The Vikings face MSUB in a GNAC twinbill Sunday (10 a.m.).
