March 24, 2004
CHICO, Calif. - Western Washington University managed just three singles, all of those in the first game, as it lost 4-0 and 8-0 to Chico State University in a non-conference softball doubleheader Wednesday at Nettleton Stadium.
The Vikings fell to 11-6 and Chico State, which had lost seven of its last eight games entering the twinbill, improved to 12-16.
Chico State pitcher Katie Stokx (4-8) pitched a perfect game in the nightcap that ended in the fifth inning because of the eight-run mercy rule. Stokx struck out four in retiring all 15 Western batters she faced.
Lindsay Himmelspach ended the contest with a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth. The Wildcats also scored two runs in the second and three in the third, one a solo home run by Bridget Overstreet.
In the opener Chico State hurler Kristin Paese (7-6) struck out nine, retiring eight in a row during one stretch.
The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in first. They scored another run in the third on a single by Allison Shirley and two more in the fifth, Kamala Kiffe driving in one with a single and later scoring on a wild pitch.
Sarah Arnold (Fr., Vancouver/Evergreen) (2-3), who went the distance, got the loss for Western in the first game. Jackie Quint (Fr., Silverdale/Central Kitsap) (3-2) started the second game and went 2-1/3 innings before being relieved by Nicole Walker (Fr., Kenmore/Juanita), who had her string of consecutive innings not allowing an earned run end at 23-2/3.
Western, which split a twinbill at Sonoma State on Monday and swept two games with San Francisco State on Tuesday, complete their eight-game northern California road trip with a doubleheader at Cal State Stanislaus on Friday (1 p.m.).
