SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Showing the effects of a 21-day layoff, Western Washington University opened an eight-day road trip through northern California with 5-4 and 7-2 losses to San Francisco State University a non-conference softball doubleheader Sunday at the SFSU Softball Field.

The Vikings, who had four home doubleheaders either canceled or postponed during that stretch, fell to 8-8. They left 12 runners on base and committed four errors in the two losses.

SFSU, which has won 17 of its last 23 games following a 3-11 start, improved to 20-18. Vanessa Truan (12-7) got the win in relief for the Gators in the opener, striking out five, allowing just three hits and walking two in 5-1/3 innings. In the nightcap, Vanessa Rodrigue drove in three runs and scored twice and Jordanna Freemer drove in two runs and scored two.

In the first game, Western took a quick lead with two runs in the top of the second inning off SFSU starter Kristine Beristianos on run-scoring singles by Misty Britt (Sr., Kelso) and Hannah Becker (Fr., Robstown, TX/Calallen).

The Gators came back with four runs in the bottom of that frame, two on a double by Karolyn Gubbine and another on a single by Rodrigue.

The Vikings got one back in the fifth as Britt singled and eventually scored on a ground out. SFSU also tallied one in that inning, Nicole Hartfield hitting a two-out double and scoring on a single by Freemer.

Western's Liza Teichler (Jr., Sammamish/Skyline) hit a one-out solo home run in the seventh, the third of her career, all this season. But Truann ended the game with a strikeout and ground out.

Freshman pitcher Sarah McEnroe (Woodinville) lost for the first time in three decisions as a Viking. She struck out three and did not issue a walk, retiring nine straight after the four-run second.

In the second game, Western again started strong with two runs in the top of the first on RBI-singles by Meghan Flem (Fr., Hood River, OR/Hood River Valley) and Becker.

Freemer tied the score at 2-2 with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first. She singled in the third and scored on a two-out double by Kristin Bartholomay.

The Gators got two more runs in the fifth, one on a sacrifice bunt by Danielle Russo and the other on a double by Rodrigue. Rodregue also hit a two-run homer in the sixth.

SFSU pitcher Kaitlin Klein (1-3) blanked the Vikings after the first, allowing just one double following that rally. She scattered four hits, struck out two and walked one.

Ashley Osman (Sr., Federal Way/Jefferson) (0-1) worked the first 3-1/3 innings for Western before being relieved by Jackie Quint (Sr., Silverdale/Central Kitsap). In all, they gave up 10 hits.
