TURLOCK, Calif. -
Catcher Andrea Sherrill (So., Edmonds/Kamiak) drove in the winning run with a two-out single in the bottom of the eighth inning as Western Washington University defeated Academy of Art University, 8-7, in the opener of a non-league softball doubleheader Wednesday at the Cal State Stanislaus softball field.
The Vikings evened their record at 10-10 and AAU fell to 9-24.
Western led 7-4, but the Urban Knights scored three runs on five hits in the top of the seventh to send the game into extra innings.
The Vikings' Alyssa Malland (Fr., Mukilteo/Kamiak) picked up her first career win, coming on in relief to retire the side in order in the top of the eighth.
Trailing 2-1, Western scored three runs in the fourth, two on a triple by Krista Bickar (Fr., Hoquiam). AAU scored twice in the top of the fifth to tie the score at 4-4, but the Vikings scored three more in the bottom of that frame. Caitlin Dotlich (So., Sedro-Woolley/Burlington-Edison) doubled in one run and scored on a single by Kelsey Anderson (So., Mount Vernon).
Anderson, Samantha Rutherford (So., Kenmore/Inglemoor), Sherrill and Michelle Wrigley (So., Bothell/Inglemoor) each had two hits for Western.
Sierrah Garcia (5-13) got the loss for AAU.
