Western ends losing streak with 5-2 win over Grand Canyon

MODESTO, Calif. - Megan McPhee (Sr., Anacortes) keyed a three-run seventh inning with a two-run double as the Western Washington University softball team defeated Grand Canyon University, 5-2, to open second-day action at the fourth annual Easton Tournament of Champions being played at Rainbow Fields.
The Vikings, who snapped a seven-game losing streak, improved to 5-12. Nicole Walker (So., Kenmore/Juanita) (2-3) got the victory, scattering six hits, striking out four and walking one.
Grand Canyon fell to 7-14-1.
With the score knotted at 2-2 in the top of the seventh, McPhee knocked in two runs with a one-out double. She eventually scored on a two-out infield hit by Adrienne Moore (Sr., Lake Forest Park/Shorecrest).
With the score tied at 1-1, the Vikings got an unearned run in the fifth, only to have Grand Canyon tie the game again with a run in the sixth.
McPhee was 2-for-4, lifting her team-leading batting average to .382 (21-for-55), and Moore was 2-for-3.
Michelle Farrell (1-3), who struck out five and walked four, got the loss for Grand Canyon.
Western, which opened the tourney Friday with back-to-back, five-inning 9-1 losses to Montana State-Billings and Cal State Bakersfield, completes pool play against Cal State San Bernardino at 1:30 p.m.
Bracket play is slated for Sunday.
