WWU opens TOC play with 7-6 win over Azusa Pacific on Friday

TURLOCK, Calif. - A two-out, two-run single by Kaleigh Keating (Sr., Salinas, CA/Notre Dame Salinas) in the sixth inning put the Western Washington University softball team ahead to stay and Shayna Adelstein (Fr., Tucson, AZ/Marana Mountain View) picked up her second save of the season with a solid inning of relief work in the seventh as the Vikings edged Azusa Pacific University, 7-6, on Friday at the 13th annual Tournament of Champions.

The game was the first of three slated for WWU on the tourney's opening day. The Vikings host Cal State Stanislaus at 1:15 p.m. and Cal State Dominguez Hills at 8 p.m.

WWU improved to 18-9 and APU dropped to 27-14 with its third straight loss. APU took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the fifth when Madison Hernandez hit her second solo home run of the game, giving her four for the season.

But WWU responded with three in the sixth to go in front 7-5. Prior to Keating's big hit, the Vikings' first run of the inning came on a bases-loaded walk to Allie Crowe Jr., Auburn/Thomas Jefferson).

WWU pitcher Jenna DeRosier (Sr., Kelso) won her sixth straight game, improving to 11-3.

Adelstein took over in the seventh with a runner on first and no outs. The first batter she faced reached base on a fielder's choice sacrifice attempt. But Adelstein bore down to get three straight groundouts, the second scoring a run, to end the game.

Keating was 2-for-4, driving in three runs and scoring two. She also had a RBI single in WWU's two-run fifth.

Alexie Levin (So., Everett) extended her hitting streak to 11 with a run-scoring single as the Vikings opened the game with two runs in the first.
