Softball Drops a Pair of One-Run Games to Saint Martin's

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - The Western Washington University softball team closed out the home portion of the 2018 schedule with a pair of one-run defeats on Monday, falling to Saint Martin's University 2-1 and 3-2 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader at Viking Field.

WWU falls to 12-26 on the season and 6-13 in GNAC play with the pair of losses, and is now 7-14 in games decided by 2 or fewer runs this season. Saint Martin's improved to 19-14 overall and 9-7 in league play with its 10th win in the last 12 games.

The Vikings were limited to 10 hits, and were 2-for-14 with runners in scoring position while leaving 9 runners on base combined in the doubleheader. Junior Shearyna Labasan (Mililani, HI/Maryknoll) combined to go 3-for-6 with her team-leading 10th double of the season for the day, while freshmen Rylie Wales (Snohomish, WA) and Kira Doan (Brier, WA/Mountlake Terrace) each recorded a pair of hits.

Doan (Game 1) and Labasan (Game 2) combined to allow just 3 earned runs in a pair of complete-game efforts, but were on the losing end of the one-run games.

Saint Martin's junior pitcher Lauren Maley, a product of Ferndale High School, earned the save in the first game with 2.0 perfect innings of relief and recorded her 13th win of the season allowing 4 hits and 2 runs (1 ER) in 5.1 innings out of the bullpen in the second game.

WWU's Carlie Richards (Kennewick, WA/Kamiakin) and Morgan VanRiper (Kalama, WA) were honored during a pregame ceremony prior to playing their last games on Viking Field as part of Senior Day festivities.

The Vikings are off this weekend and return to action with a pair of road doubleheaders April 21 (Saturday) at Saint Martin's and April 22 (Sunday) at Central Washington. All of WWU's remaining 8 games of the 2018 season will be on the road in GNAC play, with another possible makeup game vs. Montana State Billings.

Saint Martin's scored a pair of runs in the top of the 1st inning and then held on for a 2-1 victory to open the doubleheader.

The Saints took the early 2-0 lead scoring a pair of runs in their first at-bat in the 1st inning, but freshman pitcher Kira Doan held Saint Martin's scoreless the rest of the way.

WWU pulled to within one run at 2-1 after a leadoff home run in the bottom of the 2nd inning by Paityn Cyr (Mount Vernon, WA), but put only one runner in scoring position the rest of the game.

Saint starter Kim Nelson (6-4) earned the win allowing 4 hits and one run in 5.0 innings, and relief pitcher Lauren Maley provided 2.0 perfect innings of relief for her first save of the season.

Doan (1-4) was saddled with the loss scattering 9 hits and allowing 2 runs in the complete-game effort.

WWU's 4 hits were recorded by different players, with Cyr hitting her team-leading 6th home run of the season and Doan going 1-for-3 with her 9th double of the season (4th over last 3 games).

Saints center fielder Lauren Diuco went 3-for-4 with a run scored and catcher Devyn Connolly went 2-for-3 and drove in a run in the 1st inning.

Game 2: SMU 3, WWU 2  Box Score & Play-by-Play | Game Book

The Vikings were again on the short end of a one-run game, this time being edged 3-2 in the second game of the doubleheader.

The two teams exchanged runs in the 3rd inning, before the Saints pulled ahead with a pair of runs in the top of the 4th inning. A fielding error by WWU second baseman Kira Doan led to a pair of unearned runs in the inning, with left fielder Lindsay Miller and center fielder Lauren Diuco both driving in runs with 2-out singles.

The Vikings pulled to within one run with a single tally in the top of the 5th inning on a run-scoring single to left field by Shearyna Labasan. WWU would not be able to complete the comeback as SMU relief pitcher Lauren Maley retired the final 8 batters she faced, including a 3-pitch bottom of the 7th inning to seal the victory.

Labasan went 2-for-3 with her team-leading 10th double of the season to lead the Vikings at the plate, and also pitched a complete game in the circle allowing 10 hits and 3 runs (1 ER) in 7.0 innings. She was saddled with the loss to fall to 5-13 on the season.

Diuco, designated player Kylie Lopez and right fielder Regan Byrd each had 2 hits for the Saints. Maley (13-9) earned the win allowing 4 hits and 2 runs (1 ER) in 5.1 innings. She struck out 3 batters and did not issue a walk.
