BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Sarah McEnroe (So., Woodinville) pitched a three-hit shutout and pinch runner Hilary Cosentino (Fr., Stevenson) scored the game's only run on a bases-loaded walk to pinch hitter Emily Hardin (Fr., Bothell/Inglemoor) in the bottom of the seventh inning as Western Washington University edged Saint Martin's University, 1-0, in the opener of a Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Sunday at Viking Field on the WWU campus.

The defending league champion Vikings, who entered the day just one game out of first place in the league standings, improved to 18-14 overall and 7-4 in league play with its second straight win after snapping a seven-game losing streak. They have scored just nine runs in their last eight games.

Saint Martin's suffered its fourth consecutive loss, falling to 15-23 overall and 3-8 in GNAC action.

McEnroe (2-6) allowed just three Saints to reach second base, striking out three and not issuing a walk.

Saint Martin's pitcher Jamie Herrick (3-8), who also gave up only three hits, was even better for the first six innings, not allowing a Viking to get past first base.

But in the seventh, Western's Liza Teichler (Sr., Sammamish/Skyline) reached first on an error by the shortstop and was replaced by Cosentino, who got to second on a sacrifice bunt by Katie Barker (Sr., Auburn/Auburn-Riverside). Herrick got a strikeout for the second out, but then walked three straight Vikings, the last being Hardin, to force in Consentino.

Those were the only walks of the game for Herrick, who struck out four. Consentino stole third base during the second walk.

Two of Western's hits were by Michelle Wrigley (Fr., Bothell/Inglemoor).

The only extra-base hit of the game was a double by Saint Martin's Holly Morris with one out in the fourth.
