Box Score - Game 2
BELLINGHAM, Wash. -
Western Washington University pitcher Jenna DeRosier, a senior from Kelso, won both games, starting the opener and relieving in the nightcap, as Western Washington University swept Northwest Nazarene University, 7-4 and 10-9, on Senior Day in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Saturday at Viking Field on the WWU campus.
The Vikings, who have won 16 of their last 19 games and finished 12-2 at home this season, improved to 27-11 overall and 14-6 in GNAC action. They already have clinched a berth in the GNAC Tournament on May 1-3 and were ranked ninth in the first NCAA Division II West Region poll last week.
Northwest Nazarene, which has lost its last eight games, fell to 11-32 overall and 3-17 in conference play.
DeRosier, 16-3, has won her last 11 decisions.
WWU, which swept its four-game series with NNU, won the second game in the bottom of the seventh inning when Arianna Barrio (So., Stanwood/Lakewood) drew a leadoff walk, went to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a single by Kaleigh Keating (Sr., Salinas, CA/Notre Dame Salinas) and scored on a wild pitch.
After both teams scored twice in the first, WWU took a 5-2 lead in the second on a three-run double by Alexie Levin (So., Everett). NNU got back to within one, 5-4, with two runs in the fourth and took an 8-5 lead with four runs in the top of the fifth.
The Vikings rallied with four runs of their own in the fifth for a 9-8 lead. With two outs, Haylee Baker (Poulsbo/Bainbridge) singled across two runs and Levin put WWU ahead with a run-scoring base hit.
Shelby Johnson tied the game at 9-9 with two outs in the top of the seventh on her third hit, a double. That was the only run DeRosier (16-3) gave up in three innings of relief.
That set the stage for Barrio's tour around the bases.
Baker and Levin each had three hits in the contest. Levin drove in four runs and Baker three. Baker also scored three times.
In the first game, NNU took a 3-0 lead on a three-run homer by Justine Callen in the first inning.
WWU scored six in the third, two each on a double by Baker and a single by Mackenzie Hughes (Fr., Ellensburg).
The Vikings scored one more run in the fourth and NNU one in the fifth.
DeRosier pitched the first six innings, giving up six hits and striking out five.
Whitney Carlton was 4-for-4 for the Crusaders.
Three WWU players had four hits on the day, Barrio, Baker and Autumn Isaacson (Jr., Lake Stevens), Baker drove in five runs and scored four. Baker had four RBI and Isaacson scored four times.
Isaacson stole her 28th base (31 attempts) of the season in the second game to tie the GNAC record.
The contests were the last at home for five Viking seniors. They included Baker, Meghan Carrillo (Prunedale, CA/North Monterey County), DeRosier, Amanda Flores (Ferndale) and Keating.
WWU ends its regular season with conference twinbills at Western Oregon on Saturday, Apr. 26 (1 p.m.), and at Saint Martin's on Sunday, Apr. 27 (1 p.m.)
