SEATTLE, Wash. -
Western Washington University fell 2-1 to Seattle University on a game-winning single by Kaha Weir in the bottom of the seventh inning Saturday in the opener of a Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball doubleheader.
The Vikings, who fell to 21-18 overall and 6-5 in league play, had a three-game winning streak snapped. Seattle improved to 23-17 overall and 6-5 in GNAC action.
Western's Jackie Quint (Sr., Silverdale/Central Kitsap) (12-8) got the loss despite scattering just five hits in a complete-game effort. She struck out two and did not issue a walk, retiring 11 in a row during one stretch.
The Vikings scored first in the top of the fifth when Hannah Becker (Fr., Robstown, TX/Calallen) had a lead-off single. Pinch runner Reina Boersma (Jr., Ferndale) advanced to third on two sacrifice bunts and scored on a single up the middle by Misty Britt (Sr., Kelso), who was 2-for-3 in the game.
Seattle tied it at 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning on a lead-off home run by Katie Ledbetter, her second of the season.
With two outs in the seventh, Cassie Cueto doubled for the Redhawks and scored on a single to left by Weir, who was 2-for-3.
Erin Martin (12-7) got the win for Seattle, giving up seven hits and striking out two.
Megan Fowler (Fr., Richland) was 2-for-2 for Western.
