Britt has record-setting day as Western gets another sweep at Central
April 26, 2007
ELLENSBURG, Wash. - Outfielder Misty Britt (Sr., Kelso/Lower Columbia CC) was 7-for-9, including two home runs, driving in seven runs and scoring five, as Western Washington University continued its late-season push for a berth in the NCAA Division II West Regional by sweeping arch-rival Central Washington University for the second straight day, 6-2 and 16-6 in six innings, in a non-conference softball doubleheader Thursday at the CWU softball field.
The Vikings, who improved to 27-19, have won five straight games and 14 of their last 18. Central, which fell to 21-19, has dropped four straight.
In the nightcap, Britt broke a school record with five hits and tied marks with five runs batted in and four runs scored as Western had a season-high 16 runs on 15 hits.
The Vikings led 8-1 after three innings, only to have Central score five runs in the bottom of the fourth. But Western countered with four-run rallies in both the fifth and sixth frames as the game ended after six because of the eight-run mercy rule.
In the first, Britt doubled and scored on a single by Liza Teichler (Jr., Sammamish/Skyline). Britt had a two-run single as the Vikings scored three in the second and in the fourth, she and Morgan Parkerson (So., RAF Lakenheath, England) each had two-run homers. It was Britt's second of the day and Parkerson's third of the year.
Britt and Nicole Walker (Sr., Kenmore/Juanita) each had run-scoring singles in Western's four-run fifth, and Parkerson had an RBI single and Teichler drove in two with a single as the Vikings scored four more in the sixth.
Teichler was 2-for-3 and Parkerson 2-for-4, each driving in three runs, and Megan Fowler (Fr., Richland) was 2-for-3 with three runs scored.
Sarah McEnroe (Fr., Woodinville), although giving up 12 hits, got her 10th victory in 12 decisions this season.
Kasey Druffel and Mallory Holtman were each 3-for-4 for Central and Catrina Robertson was 2-for-2 with two walks and two RBI.
In the opener, Western's Ashley Osman (Sr., Federal Way/Jefferson) drove in two runs and scored one and Jackie Quint (Sr., Silverdale/Central Kitsap) scattered six hits in upping her record to 14-9 with a complete-game victory.
Osman, who was 2-for-3, had a two-run triple in the bottom of the first inning after Teichler and Hannah Becker (Fr., Robstown, TX/Calallen) each singled with two outs. The triple was Osman's first in her four-year collegiate career.
In the third, Osman singled, advanced to second on a walk, went to third on a fielder's choice and scored on a sacrifice fly by McEnroe.
Western got three more runs in the sixth. McEnroe doubled to score Katie Barker (So., Auburn/Auburn-Riverside), who had singled. Britt followed with a two-run homer, her first for the Vikings.
Central picked up single runs in the third and sixth innings. In the third, Druffel, who was 2-for-3, tripled and scored on a wild pitch. In the sixth, Sara Badgley hit a solo home run, her eighth of the season.
Britt was 2-for-4 and McEnroe extended her hitting streak to eight games, going 2-for-2.
Badgley (9-8) got the loss for the Wildcats, giving up 10 hits and striking out six in 5-2/3 innings.
Western next travels to Northwest Nazarene University on Saturday (12 noon) for a Great Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader.
