Western Washington University's Ashley Osman (Jr., Federal Way) hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning to end a string of 36 scoreless innings by Humboldt State University pitchers as the Vikings fell 7-2 in the opener of a Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Saturday at the HSU Softball Field.
Western, which had a five-game winning streak end, fell to 21-24 overall and 9-10 in league play.
Humboldt State, ranked No.1 in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association/NCAA Division II Top 25 and No.1 in the West Region, improved to 49-4 overall with its 14th straight win and 43rd in its last 44 games. The Lumberjacks, who are 18-1 at home, have already clinched their fifth straight GNAC title (21-1).
Humboldt State hit three home runs in the game, upping its total to 48 for the year. One was by Brandi Harrison, her 13th of the season.
Lizzy Prescott (23-2) was the Lumberjacks' winning pitcher, striking out 12 in 6-1/3 innings. That raised her school-record season strikeout total to 241.
