BELLINGHAM, Wash. -
Liza Teichler (Fr., Sammamish/Skyline) capped a standout performance by driving in the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 11th inning as Western Washington University rallied to defeat Saint Martin's College, 7-6, in the first game of a Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball tripleheader on Saturday at Viking Field.
The Vikings, who have won 14 of their last 17 games, improved to 18-15 overall and 12-4 in league action. Teichler finished 3-for-5, driving in three runs and scoring two.
Saint Martin's, which has lost seven straight and 18 of its last 21, dropped to 10-33 overall and 4-17 in GNAC play.
Trailing 6-5, Western scored two runs to win the game in the 11th without getting a hit.
With the international tiebreaker in effect, the inning began with Ashley Barber (Jr., Camas) being placed on second base for the Vikings. Attempting a sacrifice bunt, Mandy Kaestner (Jr., Coeur d'Alene, ID/Lake City) reached first on a fielder's choice as Barber was safe at third.
Megan McPhee was walked intentionally to load the bases, and Cortney Walton (So., Chesapeake, VA/Great Bridge) drew a walk to force in the tying run. Teichler ended the game with a fly to right field that scored Kaestner.
Saint Martin's had also taken one-run leads in the eighth and 10th innings, but Western fought back to tie the game both times. In the eighth, Teichler had a leadoff double and scored on a two-out single by Barber. In the 10th, Teicher singled home Adrienne Moore (Sr., Lake Forest Park/Shorecrest), who had been placed on second to start the inning.
Western got out to a quick 3-0 lead.
The Vikings tallied one in the first, Barber getting a leadoff single, stealing second and scoring on a single by Megan McPhee (Sr., Anacortes). They got two more in the second as Moore led off with a double and scored on a single by Teichler. Teichler later scored on a double by Katie Barker (Fr., Auburn/Auburn-Riverside).
Barber finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs and one run scored, and Moore was 3-for-6.
Jackie Quint (So., Silverdale/Central Kitsap), 11-5, won her eighth straight decision in relief of Stephanie Sheppard (Jr., Camas/Lower Columbia CC), who worked the first 5-2/3 innings. Quint allowed just three hits in 5-1/3 innings, striking out one and walking one.
