WHAT’S HAPPENING…the Western Washington University softball team (6-9, 3-1 GNAC) continues its stretch of 10 consecutive home games hosting Western Oregon (Saturday) and Concordia (Sunday) in conference doubleheaders this weekend at Viking Field…both doubleheaders start at noon.

LABASAN NAMED GNAC PITCHER OF THE WEEKShearyna Labasan has been named the GNAC Softball Pitcher of the Week after going 2-0 with a 2.50 ERA (5 ER, 14.0 IP) in the series victory over Northwest Nazarene last week…in her second start vs. NNU, Labasan had a perfect game through 5.2 innings before allowing a single and home run…for the season Labasan is 4-3 with a 4.07 ERA (25 ER, 43.0 IP) and 31 strikeouts, ranking 9th in the GNAC in ERA, 6th in strikeouts, tied for 3rd in wins and 6th in innings pitched.
RECENT SUCCESS…after opening the season 0-7, the Vikings have turned things around by winning 6 of their last 8 games and are 6-9 through the first 15 games of the season (3-1 in GNAC play)…WWU’s first 7 games included four teams that are currently in the current top 20 of the NFCA Division II coaches poll (#3 Dixie State, #5 Chico State, #15 Sonoma State, #19 Concordia-Irvine)…here is a statistical look at WWU’s first 7 games and last 8 games:

KASNER WITH A KAnna Kasner has recorded 42 strikeouts in her 8 G/7 GS this season, averaging 7.23 strikeouts per 7.0 innings (2nd in the GNAC)…Kasner led the GNAC with 188 strikeouts last season and set the WWU single-season record averaging 9.16 K/7.0 IP…currently tied for 8th in program history with 230 strikeouts in 35 career appearances (30 starts) and is the leader with 8.73 K/7.0 IP.
YOUNG TEAM…of the 14 player that have seen action this season, 11 are underclassmen (Fr/So) and 7 are true freshmen…WWU has only one true senior that has seen action this season in outfielder Carlie Richards.
THE HOME SCHEDULE…WWU’s home schedule is front loaded, with 10 of 14 games at Viking Field schedule in the month of March…this weekend marks the games 5-8 of a stretch of playing 5 consecutive GNAC doubleheaders in Bellingham…23 of WWU’s last 27 games of the regular season will be on the road.
CARLIE ON BASECarlie Richards has reached base safely (H, BB, HBP) in 12 of 13 games this season, with a current streak of 12 straight…dating back to last season, Richards has reached base safely in 49 of her last 53 games (92.5%).
RBI LEADERJackie Lucido leads the team and is 6th in the GNAC with 15 RBI…she tied the WWU single-game record with 7 RBI Feb. 10 vs. Colorado Mines, hitting a pair of 3-run home runs.

  • Western Oregon – WWU leads the all-time series vs. WOU 67-38, including a 28-19 mark in Bellingham…Vikings are 9-6 over the last 15 games dating back to the 2015 season…WWU defeated WOU 5-0 in last season’s GNAC Championship game, and was 4-2 overall vs. the Wolves in 2017.
  • Concordia – WWU leads the all-time series 16-4, with an 8-2 record in Bellingham, but the series is tied 4-4 over the last two seasons in GNAC play…Western was 12-0 vs. the Cavaliers prior to the start of the 2016 season.

  • 200 Wins – Head coach Amy Suiter recorded her 200th win at WWU and is 217-198 (.523) overall as a head coach.
