BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Looking to regroup, the Western Washington University softball team travels to Saint Martin's University for Great Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheaders on Saturday (12 noon) and Sunday (12 noon).
The Vikings are 5-7, all of their games being league counters, and fourth in the GNAC standings. They lost all four contests last weekend at home to league-leading Central Washington despite nearly overcoming large deficits with big rallies in two of the games.
Western is 4-0 on the road this season, all the wins coming at Northwest Nazarene, and 1-7 at home.
Saint Martin's is 5-12 overall, losing four of its last five games, and fifth in the conference at 4-8.
The Vikings have three players hitting .400 or better, led by outfielder Jessica Carey (So., Everett) at .484 (15-for-31) with five doubles. Shortstop Caitlin Dotlich (Jr., Sedro-Woolley/Burlington-Edison) is batting .417 (15-for-36), leading the team in both runs batted in with nine and runs scored with eight. She already has six extra-base hits, including three doubles, two triples and one home run, and earned GNAC Player of the Week honors for her performance at Northwest Nazarene two weeks ago.
Hitting .400 (10-for-25) is second baseman Stephanie Fox (So., Sammamish/Eastlake) who will return to action against Saint Martin's after missing the last five games with a severely sprained ankle.
Erika Hendron (Fr., Redmond), 1-1, tops the Western pitching staff with a 2.58 earned run average. Erika Quint (Jr., Silverdale/Central Kitsap) is 2-2 with a 3.00 ERA, striking out 25 in 30 innings pitched, and Sarah McEnroe (Sr., Woodinville) is 2-4 with a 3.03 ERA.
Saint Martin's is led in hitting by Kristi Sigafoos with a .364 (16-for-44) average, followed by Joslyn Eugenio at .362 (25-for-69) with eight doubles, and Morgan Klemm at .306 (19-for-62) with 12 RBI.
The Saints' top pitcher is Amanda Arnzen, who has a 4-5 record and 2.67 ERA.
