WHAT’S HAPPENING…the WWU softball team returns home to Viking Field hosting Saint Martin’s (Sunday) and Central Washington (Monday) in a pair of GNAC doubleheaders…the game schedule was shifted due to heavy rain in the forecast for Saturday (originally CWU doubleheader).

THE RECORD…the Vikings are 10-6 overall and in 3rd place in the GNAC with a 3-3 record…have gone 2-2 at home, 6-2 on the road and 2-2 in neutral site games…4-1 in games decided by 2 or fewer runs…recorded a GNAC-best 5 shutouts (4 individual)…out-scored opponents 42-26 from the 4th inning on, but has been outscored 36-30 in the first three innings.

LAST TIME OUT…the Vikings went 1-1 last weekend at Concordia, having their Oregon road trip cut short with the scheduled Sunday games at Western Oregon postponed…beat Concordia 4-3 in the first game, and then were defeated 6-3 in the nightcap…Mackenzie Palmer and Makinlee Sellevold (2 RBI) each went 3-for-8 in the doubleheader…Anna Kasner recorded the win in the first game registering 11 strikeouts in the complete-game effort.

SERIES HISTORY…a brief look at the series history between WWU the opponents this weekend, Saint Martin’s and Central Washington:

  • Saint Martin’s: WWU leads the all-time series 88-33, including a 40-14 mark in home games…went 3-1 vs. the Saints last season, with a doubleheader sweep in Bellingham on April 23…won 6 of last 7 in the series…scheduled to travel to Lacey for a doubleheader on April 8.

HOME RUN RECORD...junior first baseman Emily Benson has hit 5 home runs through the first 16 games of the season…with her 4th home run of the year set the all-time career home run record at WWU with 23 career home runs (previous record was 22 HR by Meghan Flem)…ranks tied for 17th in GNAC history with 17 home runs…currently WWU career leader in slugging percentage at .628 (204 TB) and 5th with a .348 (113-for-325) batting average…set the WWU single-season record with 12 home runs last season while being named a First Team All-GNAC selection…this season is batting .500 (22-for-44) to rank 3rd in the GNAC and 30th in NCAA II…also recorded a team-high 19 RBI (11th in the GNAC) while recording at least one hit in 15 of 16 games (all starts at 1B).

NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE WEEK…freshman Anna Kasner has been named the Louisville/Slugger NFCA Division II National Pitcher of the Week twice this season, March 8 and Feb. 8…Kasner joins teammate Emily Benson (3/30/16) as the only WWU players to earn the national weekly award in program history…Kasner has also won a pair of GNAC Pitcher of the Week honors (same dates as national award) and Benson was named GNAC player of the Week for Feb. 6-12.

SELLEVOLD NEARING 200 K’S…junior Makinlee Sellevold is 4 strikeouts short of 200 for her career…will become the eighth player in program history to reach the 200-strikeout milestone in a career, and first since Erika Quint in 2011.

EMILY ON BASE…junior Emily Benson has reached base safely (Hit, Walk, HBP) in all 16 games this season…recorded at least one hit in 15 of 16 games…had 14-game hitting streak to open the season snapped going 0-for-1 with 2 walks in the first game of the doubleheader at Concordia (3/11).

SELLEVOLD IN THE CIRCLE…junior pitcher/third baseman Makinlee Sellevold has 39 career wins, tied for 4th-most in program history…also 6th with 59 career starts (5th is 66) and 8th with 196 strikeouts (7th is 234)…owns a career ERA of 2.91, 14th-best in program history…Sellevold went 12-7, 3.24 ERA (64 ER, 138.1 IP) in 24 G/22 GS last season, but ended the season going 7-1, 2.57 ERA over her last 9 G/8 GS…also a career .306 hitter (87-for-284) with 7 HR and 52 RBI.

IMMEDIATE IMPACT…the 2017 incoming class has made an immediate impact for WWU early in the season…freshman pitcher Anna Kasner (5-2, 2.42 ERA, 73 strikeouts, 9 G/8 GS) is among the GNAC pitching leaders in several categories and has garnered conference and national recognition…freshman outfielder Mackenzie Palmer has appeared in 15 games (14 starts) and is 2nd on the team with a .385 (20-for-52) batting average…freshman shortstop Paityn Cyr has started 15 games with a .271 batting average (13-for-48) and has also made 2 pitching appearances.

COACH SUITER…head coach Amy Suiter is in her seventh season at the helm of the program…owns an overall record of 172-150 (.534) at WWU and career head coaching record of 187-192 (.493)…led WWU to the 2015 GNAC Tournament title game…named the 2011 GNAC Coach of the Year, directing Vikings to 36-16 record, win total being school best, second place in GNAC and No.5 seed at NCAA Division II Championships…native of Mount Vernon and played collegiately at the University of Washington.

GNAC PRESEASON POLL…the Vikings were picked to finish 4th in the conference in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches Poll…WWU finished 26-21 overall and 15-13 in conference play in 2016, placing 5th in the GNAC standings, narrowly missing a berth to the GNAC Championships by a single game…WWU placed 2nd in the GNAC regular-season standings in both 2014 and 2015…WWU collected 41 points in the 2017 poll to rank just behind Saint Martin’s (46 points) in third…Central Washington is the preseason favorite, garnering 6 of 8 first-place votes.

QUICK FACTS…the 2017 roster features 11 returners and an incoming class of one transfer and 5 freshmen…WWU lost 5 regular starters from last season, but return 5 players who started 25 or more games last year, including a pair of 2016 All-GNAC selections in junior first baseman Emily Benson (First Team) and senior second baseman Kali Patterson (Second Team).

GAME CHANGES…WWU will host Western Oregon in a doubleheader on Friday, April 21 at Viking Field, making up the postponed games that were rained out on March 12 in Monmouth…WOU will be the home team for the doubleheader.
