BELLINGHAM, Wash. -
HOME SWEET HOME: The Western Washington University softball team (6-3, 1-1 GNAC) opens its home schedule Saturday (12 noon), entertaining Saint Martin's (2-9, 1-3) in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader at Viking Field.
The Vikings won just two of six meetings with Saint Martin's last season. The Saints have been outscored 64-27 in 11 games this year.
Western, which is tied with Northwest Nazarene (5-14, 2-2) for third in the GNAC behind Humboldt State (24-6, 2-0) and Seattle U. (7-4, 4-0), opened league play last week with a doubleheader split against arch-rival Central Washington (9-7, 1-3). Western was blanked 1-0 in the opener, but bounced back for a 7-0 win in the nightcap.
In the second game, freshman pitcher Jackie Quint (Silverdale/Central Kitsap) tossed a five-hit shutout, striking out five and throwing just 82 pitches to improve to 3-0 on the season. The shutout was the second straight for Quint who tossed a six-hitter against Montana State-Billings in a 7-0 win at the Central Washington University Invitational.

CALIFORNIA TRIP LOOMS LARGE: The Vikings travel to Northern California next week to play four important doubleheaders against West Region foes. Western opens the road trip Monday at Sonoma State (8-22), then faces San Francisco State (11-15) on Tuesday, Chico State (10-16) on Wednesday, and Cal State Stanislaus (11-18) on Friday. All of the doubleheaders begin at 1 p.m. except for a 1:30 start against Chico State.
A strong showing by the Vikings would significantly help their push for a second consecutive trip to the NCAA Division II West Regional in May. Last season, Western won just two of eight games on a similar road trip, which very nearly cost the Vikings a trip to post-season play.
FROSH PITCHING SHINES EARLY: One of Western's biggest question marks coming into the season was how the pitching staff composed of three freshmen - Quint, Nicole Walker (Kenmore, WA/Juanita) and Sarah Arnold (Vancouver, WA/Evergreen) - would hold up. Any doubts have been erased as the trio has been impressive through the Vikings' first nine games.
Despite losing for the first time in four decisions in the Vikings' 1-0 loss at Central, Walker did not allow an earned run, lowering her team-best earned run average to 0.66. She has given up just two earned runs and struck out 18 in 21-1/3 innings.
Quint, who is 3-0 with a 0.81 ERA, has not given up a run in her last 14 innings.
Arnold is 0-2, but has pitched well following a rough opening-day start in which she allowed five earned runs in three innings against Western Oregon, a game Western came back to win 8-6. In her last outing, Arnold gave up just one earned run in the Vikings' 5-4 loss to Central at the CWU Invitational.
AROUND THE HORN: Jodie Rock (Sr., Anacortes) continues to pace the Viking offense, leading the team in hitting (.379, 11-for-29), runs batted in (8), runs scored (7), doubles (3), home runs (2), slugging percentage (.828) and total bases (24) ... Also batting over .300 for Western are Mandy Kaestner (So., Coeur d'Alene, ID) .364 (seven runs scored, five stolen bases), Dani Deyette (Sr., Olympia) .345, Adrienne Moore (Jr., Lake Forest Park/Shorecrest) .333 (seven RBI, five doubles), and Megan McPhee (Jr., Anacortes) .304 ... All three of Western's losses have been by one run ... The playing status of outfielder Holly Hayden (Jr., Shadle Park/Spokane CC) remains indefinite after she suffered a serious knee injury against Montana State-Billings on March 7. Hayden was hitting .278 (5-for-18) with three doubles and six runs batted in ... Western is 1-2 against Central this season, despite allowing the Wildcats just one earned run.
CAREER MARKS: Rock has three triples this season, tying the school career record of 12. She also has drawn five walks, giving her a career record total of 49. Third baseman Adrienne Moore (Jr., Lake Forest Park/Shorecrest) has nine career home runs, three short of Carlena Herd's (1999-2002) school record of 12.
HOME SUCCESS: Western has a 46-13-1 record in five seasons at Viking Field, including one stretch of 16 straight wins during the 1999 and 2000 campaigns.
PAST SUCCESS: The Vikings have had five consecutive 25-win seasons, winning the first and only national championship in school history in 1998. Head coach Lonnie Hicks (3rd season) has a 59-40 (.598) record at Western, including leading the Vikings to their first NCAA II West Regional appearance last season.
