Quint key to Vikings' success
March 31, 2011
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Halfway through the regular season, Erika Quint is well on her way to the best year ever enjoyed by a pitcher at Western Washington University.
The 5-foot-3 senior right-hander has been the key to the Vikings' current 21-4 record, five-game lead in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings at 14-2 and school-best No.6 ranking in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association/NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll.
Quint, a senior from Silverdale and a graduate of Central Kitsap High School, already has been named GNAC Pitcher of the Week four times this season, earning the honor in each of the last three weeks.
She is unbeaten in 15 decisions this season with six shutouts and an earned run average of 1.11. The win total is just three short of the school record set by her sister Jackie in 2007 and the shutout total is only two shy of the WWU standard of eight set by Alison Haukaas in 1996.
Quint's consecutive win streak of 16, which includes one from 2010, is also a school record and five away from the GNAC standard set in 2006.
In holding opposing batters to a .176 average and just 14 extra-base hits in 100-2/3 innings pitched, Quint has recorded 141 strikeouts. The whiff total is 34 short of her sister Jackie's school record 175, also set in 2007.
Quint has struck out 10 or more batters in a game a WWU record eight times this season, two shy of the GNAC standard. She had a school-record 16 strikeouts in an 11-inning 2-1 victory over Western Oregon.
Over her last 32-2/3 innings pitched, Quint has given up just two runs, that a two-run homer in the first inning of Tuesday's 13-5 win over Cal State Monterey Bay. She began that stretch with a school-record 22-1/3 scoreless innings.
Quint was a first-team GNAC all-star last year, posting an 11-9 record with a 2.66 ERA and 148 strikeouts. She spent the two previous seasons at Olympic CC, twice being an NWAACC all-Northern Region selection. In 2007-08, Quint was the NWAACC North Division Pitcher of the Year and OCC Female Athlete of the Year.
Western is competing in the Cal State Stanislaus Tournament of Champions on Friday through Sunday at Turlock, Calif.
