April 4, 2011
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Two Western Washington University softball players, pitcher Erika Quint (Sr., Silverdale/Central Kitsap) and second baseman Stephanie Fox (Jr., Sammamish/Eastlake), were all-tourney picks at the 10th annual Cal State Stanislaus Tournament of Champions presented by Mizuno.
The duo helped the Vikings win five of six games, reaching the semifinals of the Championship Bracket before falling 4-0 in nine innings to Chico State on Sunday. In all, 22 teams competed in the tournament.
Quint won four of five decisions and had a 1.29 earned run average, striking out 39 in 32-2/3 innings pitched. She worked eight shutout innings in the semifinal before suffering her first loss in 20 decisions this season.
Fox led Western with a .429 (6-for-14) batting average, two of the hits being doubles. She drove in five runs and scored three.
The finish was the Vikings' best at the tourney since 2004. They reached the Championship Bracket semifinals that season as well as in 2003.
Western returns to Great Northwest Athletic Conference action this weekend with doubleheaders at Montana State Billings on Saturday (1 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.). The Vikings hold a five-game lead in the GNAC standings at 14-2.
