WHAT’S HAPPENING
…the Western Washington University softball team returns home for a busy weekend with three doubleheaders scheduled at Viking Field…WWU will host Western Oregon on Friday (1 & 3 pm) and Saturday (12 & 2 pm), and Concordia (12 & 2 pm) on Sunday…the Vikings complete the home schedule Tuesday with a doubleheader vs. Simon Fraser (1 & 3 pm).

AWAY TEAM AT HOME…the Vikings will be the designated away team for Friday’s doubleheader vs. Western Oregon, as the game is a makeup for the rainouts that were scheduled for March 12 in Monmouth…WWU will bat first and will be the away team on the scoreboard.

DOWN THE STRETCH…the Vikings will play 8 games over a 5-day stretch to close out the home portion of the regular-season schedule…WWU has 12 games remaining in the season, which will be played over a 9-day stretch (8 in Bellingham) from April 21-29.

GNAC STANDINGS…the Vikings are 9-7 in GNAC play and in 3rd place heading into the penultimate weekend of the conference schedule…have won 4 of their last 6 games to move up from a tie for 4th place…the top 4 teams in the standings advance to the GNAC Championships with the automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Championships on the line…here is a look at the updated GNAC standings:

THE RECORD…the Vikings are 20-15 overall and in 3rd place in the GNAC with a 9-7 record…have gone 4-4 at home, 10-6 on the road and 6-5 in neutral site games…7-2 in games decided by 2 or fewer runs…recorded a GNAC-best 9 shutouts (7 individual).

LAST WEEK…the Vikings played only two games last week, sweeping a road doubleheader vs. Simon Fraser 7-4 and 7-2…the junior duo of Emily Benson and Makinlee Sellevold led the way in the sweep, combining to go 9-for-15 at the plate with 6 RBI…freshman Anna Kasner recorded a complete-game victory in G#1 to improve to 11-5 overall and 7-1 in GNAC play…overall the Vikings out-hit the Clan 22-8 in the doubleheader, with Sellevold (5-for-8, 2B, 3B, 2 RBI), Shearyna Labasan (4-for-7, 4 R, 4 RBI), Carlie Richards (4-for-7, 2B, 3 RBI), Benson (4-for-7, R, HR, 4 RBI) and Kasner (3-for-7, 2 R, 2 2B, RBI) leading the way.

SHUTOUTS….WWU has recorded 9 shutouts this season, including 4 of the Vikings last 8 wins…nearly half of WWU’s wins this season (9 of 20) have been shutouts…already surpassed the one shutout recorded during the 2016 season, and the 9 shutouts are tied for 6th-most in program history and the most since 10 in 2003…single-season record is 14 in 1996 and 1999.

HOME RUN RECORD...junior first baseman Emily Benson is tied for 3rd in the GNAC with 10 home runs, 2 away from matching her single-season WWU home run record of 12 set as a sophomore in 2016…owns two of the three 10-homer seasons in program history…set WWU’s all-time career home run record earlier this season with her 23rd career home run (previous record was 22 HR by Meghan Flem)…tied for 11th in GNAC history with 29 home runs.

KASNER’S K’S…freshman pitcher Anna Kasner is 11-5 with a 2.72 ERA (41 ER, 105.2 IP)…has recorded 141 strikeouts to lead the GNAC and rank 29th in the nation…also ranks 8th in NCAA II with 9.34 strikeouts per 7.0 innings…has 6 starts with 10+ strikeouts, including a trio of 13-strikeout performances…141 strikeouts are 5th-most in WWU single-season history and5 shutouts are tied for 5th-most in a season by a WWU pitcher…in GNAC play is 7-1 with a 2.79 ERA (21 ER, 52.2 IP) with 7 complete games, 3 shutouts and 65 strikeouts (8.64 K/7.0 IP).

KALI’S AVERAGE…senior Kali Patterson ranks 8th in program history with a .335 career batting average (155-for-462)…she hit .377 (63-for-167) last season while earning Second Team All-GNAC honors, the 10th-highest single-season batting average in program history.

ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAMAnna Kasner and Shearyna Labasan were named to the 18-player All-Tournament Team at the Tournament of Champions…Kasner went 2-0 with a 0.84 ERA (2 ER, 16.2 IP) with 20 strikeouts in 3 games (2 starts) in the tournament, highlighted by a complete-game, 1hit shutout with 13 strikeouts against 7th-ranked Chico State…Labasan went 2-1, 1.24 ERA (3 ER, 17.0 IP) in the circle and led the team batting .438 (7-for-16) with 5 runs scored.

COACH SUITER…head coach Amy Suiter is in her seventh season at the helm of the program…owns an overall record of 182-159 (.534) at WWU and career head coaching record of 197-201 (.495)…led WWU to the 2015 GNAC Tournament title game…named the 2011 GNAC Coach of the Year, directing Vikings to 36-16 record, win total being school best, second place in GNAC and No. 5 seed at NCAA Division II Championships…native of Mount Vernon and played collegiately at the University of Washington.
