WHAT’S HAPPENING…the Western Washington University softball team (33-17, 19-9 GNAC) is making its fourth appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament and first since 2011…WWU is the No. 8 seed in the West Region and will play in the sub-regional hosted by top-seeded and No. 5 nationally-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay…No. 4 seed Dixie State and No. 5 seed Sonoma State are also in the four-team sub regional…WWU opens the double-elimination regional Thursday facing CSUMB at 2:30 pm at the Otter Sports Complex.

NCAA TOURNAMENT HISTORY…WWU also appeared in the NCAA II Tournament in 2003, 2007 and 2011…the Vikings are 0-6 all-time in NCAA II Tournament play…the winner of the two West Regional tournaments will battle in a best-of-three super regional May 18-19.

NATIONAL RANKINGS…the NCAA II West Regional features four teams that are currently ranked in the NFCA Division II top 25…Cal State Monterey Bay (#5), Humboldt State (#12), California Baptist (#19) and Dixie State (#23) are listed in this week’s edition of the coaches poll.

GNAC TOURNAMENT…the Vikings earned the automatic bid to the NCAA II Field of 64 by winning the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Tournament played May 4-7 in Lacey, WA…the No. 2 seed Vikings went 3-0 in the tournament, with wins over host Saint Martin’s (5-4 in 10 innings), and a pair of wins over Western Oregon (2-1 and 5-0).

TOURNAMENT MVP…freshman pitcher Anna Kasner was named the GNAC Championships MVP after going 3-0 in the circle without allowing an earned run…Kasner recorded 23 strikeouts in 19.2 innings, including a 13-strikeout performance in the 2-1 win over Western Oregon in 8.0 innings…she punched WWU’s ticket to the NCAA Tournament with a 2-hit shutout over WOU in the title game.

ALL-GNAC TEAM…five WWU players were named to the 2017 GNAC Softball All-Conference Team:

NFCA ALL-WEST REGION…three WWU players were named to the 2017 National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-West Region team…Carlie Richards was a first-team selection to the All-West Region team as a utility/non-pitcher, becoming the second NFCA First Team All-West Region selection in program history joining Alexie Levin in 2014…Emily Benson and Makinlee Sellevold are the 12th and 13th second-team selections in WWU softball history…the three selections to the all-region team were tied for the most amongst West Region members with Cal State Monterey Bay and California Baptist.

KASNER NAMED PITCHER OF THE YEAR…freshman Anna Kasner was named the GNAC co-Pitcher of the Year to become the fourth WWU pitcher (5th time) to earn the award…Kasner heads into the NCAA Tournament with a 15-5 record and a 2.29 ERA (44 ER, 134.2 IP) to lead all GNAC pitchers…WWU is 16-5 in her 21 starts in the circle and is undefeated over her last 9 starts (8-0, 1.65 ERA, 7 CG, 3 Sho)…dating back to the Tournament of Champions (since 3/31), Kasner is 9-0 with a 1.47 ERA (14 ER, 66.2 IP) with 73 strikeouts in 12 G/9 GS…among NCAA II leaders is 8th in strikeouts per 7.0 innings (9.1), 23rd in strikeouts (176), and 41st with 6 shutouts.

KASNER WITH A KAnna Kasner has recorded 176 strikeouts to rank among the NCAA II leaders…ranks 2nd in WWU single-season history behind the record 290 strikeouts by Erika Quint in 2011…has recorded seven starts with 10 or more strikeouts and four starts with 13 strikeouts.

WINNING STREAK…WWU enters the NCAA Tournament with an 11-game winning streak, the 2nd-longest active winning streak amongst Division II programs behind Minnesota State (24 straight)…11-game streak is tied for the 3rd-longest in program history, trailing only a 12-game winning streak in 2011 and a record 13-game winning streak in 2001…overall 16-2 over last 18 games and won 21 of last 27.

30 WINS…WWU has reached the 30-victory mark in three of the last four seasons and nine times in the program’s 25-year history…33 wins are tied for 3rd-most in program history, trailing only 34 wins in 2007 and 36 wins in 2011.

SERIES HISTORY…a brief look at the series history between WWU the NCAA West Regional field:

#1 Cal State Monterey Bay: CSUMB leads the series 7-2, with current 5-game winning streak…WWU is 1-2 all-time in Seaside, splitting a doubleheader in last trip there in 2011.

#4 Dixie State: WWU leads series 3-1…Dixie State beat the Vikings 4-3 in last meeting on Feb. 13, 2016 in St. George, UT on a walk-off HR in the bottom of the 8th inning.

#5 Sonoma State: SSU leads series 17-9, winning 8 of last 9…two teams met earlier this season in a single game prior to the Tournament of Champions (5-1 SSU victory).

HISTORICAL SEASON…junior Emily Benson is putting together the finest statistical season in the 25-year history of the WWU softball program…she heads into the NCAA Tournament batting .432 (60-for-139) with an .763 slugging percentage (106 total bases) and .556 on-base percentage (37 walks)…all three marks are currently the best in WWU single-season history and her 12 home runs tie the record she set last season…among NCAA II leaders Benson ranks 6th in OBP, 28th in SLG and 40th in AVG.

ON A ROLL…the Vikings enter the GNAC Tournament with an 11-game winning streak and have won 16 of 18 and 18 of their last 22 games…the 22-game stretch playing to a .818 winning percentage dates back to a 4-0 shutout victory over then No. 7-ranked Chico State in the final game of the Tournament of Champions…during this stretch since April 2, WWU has combined to bat .330 (206-for-624) with 66 extra-base hits (2B-37, 3B-7, HR-22) and recorded a team ERA of 2.90 (62 ER, 149.2 IP)…Makinlee Sellevold jump-started her season since the Chico State game combining to bat .455 (35-for-77) with 19 runs, 7 doubles, 2 triples, 7 home runs, 41 RBI and a 1.334 OPS (.870 SLG, .464 OBP) during this stretch.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK NEWS…freshman Anna Kasner was a two-time Louisville/Slugger NFCA Division II National Pitcher of the Week selection this season, Feb. 8 and March 8…Kasner joins teammate Emily Benson (3/30/16) as the only WWU players to earn the national weekly award in program history…Kasner has also won a pair of GNAC Pitcher of the Week honors (same dates as national award) and a Player of the Week honor (April 24-30)…Benson was named GNAC Player of the Week for Feb. 6-12, Carlie Richards was named the GNAC Player of the Week for April 3-9 and Makinlee Sellevold earned the award for April 17-23…WWU was also named the GNAC/Red Lion Team of the Week after winning the conference tournament.

DUAL THREAT…sophomore pitcher/third baseman Shearyna Labasan (2nd Team All-GNAC) has been a key player for the Vikings – in the circle, at the plate and in the field…Labasan is 12-5 with a 3.41 ERA (60 ER, 123.1 IP) in the circle (22 G/18 GS) and is batting .366 (60-for-164) with 38 runs, 10 doubles and 17 RBI…started 14 games at third base and batted leadoff in 45 of WWU’s 50 games (team-high 13 SB).

SHUTOUTS….WWU has recorded 11 shutouts this season to lead the GNAC (had one shutout last season)…11 shutouts are 5th-most in program history and the most since 12 in 2011…single-season record is 14 in 1996 and 1999…Anna Kasner has 6 shutouts to rank tied for 4th amongst NCAA II West Region pitchers.

GRAND SALAMI…WWU has hit four grand slams, the most in a season in program history with the previous high being 3 in 2009…Anna Kasner (3rd inning) and Makinlee Sellevold (5th inning) became the first teammates to hit a grand slam in the same game, both clearing the bases in the first game of the April 29 doubleheader at NNU…overall the Vikings are batting .371 (26-for-70) with the bases loaded this season, tops in the GNAC.

THE BATS…WWU is 3rd among GNAC teams and 50th in NCAA Division II with a .314 team batting average (432-for-1375)…batting average is currently 4th-highest in program history…also has the 2nd-best slugging percentage (.465) and on-base percentage (.387) in program history…recorded 10+ hits in 20 games (16 of last 33).

THE ARMS…the Vikings rank 2nd among GNAC teams with a 3.30 team ERA…6.31 strikeouts per 7.0 innings is 2nd-best in program history…lead the GNAC with 11 shutouts and .262 opponent batting average…paces the league with 300 strikeouts, 3rd-most in WWU single-season history (2nd is 303, 1st is 354).

THE GLOVES…WWU is the top defensive team from the GNAC and 6th-best in the West Region with a .963 fielding percentage…made 51 errors in 50 games…played error-free in 21 of 50 games (18-3 record), including streak of four consecutive games heading into NCAA Tournament.

TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONSAnna Kasner and Shearyna Labasan were named to the 18-player All-Tournament Team at the Tournament of Champions…Kasner went 2-0 with a 0.84 ERA (2 ER, 16.2 IP) with 20 strikeouts in 3 games (2 starts) in the tournament, highlighted by a complete-game, 1-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts against 7th-ranked Chico State…Labasan went 2-1, 1.24 ERA (3 ER, 17.0 IP) in the circle and led the team batting .438 (7-for-16) with 5 runs scored.

COACH SUITER…head coach Amy Suiter recorded her 200th career head coaching victory April 23 with the 6-4 win over Concordia in the first game of the doubleheader…is in her seventh season at the helm of the WWU program and owns an overall record of 195-161 (.548) at WWU and career head coaching record of 210-203 (.508)…led WWU to the 2015 GNAC Tournament title game…named the 2011 GNAC Coach of the Year, directing Vikings to 36-16 record…native of Mount Vernon and played collegiately at the University of Washington.
