WWU Softball Adds Eight Players for 2018 Season

Sept. 29, 2017

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Western Washington University head softball coach Amy Suiter has announced a crop of eight newcomers that will join the program for the upcoming 2018 season.

The recruiting class includes five players from the state of Washington, and one player each from Arizona, Nevada and California.

“This will be one of the largest incoming classes that we have had and I couldn't be more excited to welcome such an incredible group of young women into our program,” said Suiter. “Coming off a strong finish last year has created just the expectation we needed this next wave of Vikings to adopt. We will be very young, however very experienced in key positions. I expect this class to come in and make an immediate impact. Eight newcomers hungry to take this program to the next level with the guidance of experienced returners should make for an exciting year for Viking softball.”

All eight incoming players will have freshman eligibility when they take the field for the 2018 season. The Vikings are scheduled to open the 2018 campaign Feb. 2-4 at the Desert Stinger in Las Vegas, Nev. The fall schedule includes a doubleheader against Edmonds Community College on Oct. 8 and the Alumni Game on Oct. 22. Both fall exhibition games start at noon at Viking Field, and do not count toward statistics or record for the 2018 season.

The Vikings are coming off a successful season in 2017 that saw the program win the GNAC Championships and advance to the fourth NCAA II Tournament in program history. WWU finished with a 34-19 record, tying for the second-most wins in the program’s 25-year history. WWU returns GNAC Co-Freshman and Co-Pitcher of the Year Anna Kasner, and all-region selections in Kasner, Carlie Richards and Shearyna Labasan for the 2018 season.
