Western's Parkerson selected to Great Britain Senior National Team
Dec. 1, 2008
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University senior outfielder/designated player Morgan Parkerson has been selected to play on the Great Britain Senior National Softball Team that will compete in the European Women's A Pool Championships this summer at Valencia, Spain.
Great Britain is ranked No.5 in Europe and finished 10th at the International Softball Foundation World Championships in Beijing, China, in 2006. Great Britain played in the 2006 ASA World Cup Tournament, where it lost to by just one run to both current Olympic champion Japan and China.
Great Britain's goal at this summer's European Championships is to place among the top three and qualify for the 2010 World Championships.
Parkerson, whose parents are both teachers for the U.S. Department of Defense in Great Britain, first tried out for the national team in 2006 and played with the squad in a preparation tournament before it went to Beijing.
But she couldn't be selected to the team because she did not have British citizenship. Now, having dual citizenship, Parkerson is expected to play an important role on the squad.
Last summer, Parkerson trained and played with the national team. She accompanied the Great Britain Junior National Team to the European Championships in August in an informal training role.
Parkerson is beginning her fourth year at Western. She was a Great Northwest Athletic Conference academic all-star last season and her first collegiate hit was a two-run homer against Western Oregon on Apr. 7, 2006.
As a sophomore, Parkerson hit .275 (22-for-80) for the Vikings, who reached the NCAA Division II West Regional. She drove in 19 runs and scored 20, having four home runs and five doubles.
Parkerson was a first-team all-Europe pick as a senior at RAF Lakenheath High School, hitting .740. She earned all-tournament honors, helping the Lancers place second at European Championships.
