BELLINGHAM, Wash. -
Western Washington University women's track and field distance runner Ashlee Vincent has been named Great Northwest Athletic Conference Female Athlete of the Week for March 23-29.
Vincent, a sophomore from Bellingham (Squalicum High graduate), broke a school record in the 5,000 meters that had stood for 12 years as she placed sixth in her section at the Stanford University Invitational last Friday.
Vincent was clocked in 17:02.00, breaking the school standard of 17:06.1 set by Lisa Waltenburg in 1991.
Vincent's time was 40 seconds better than her previous NCAA Division II provisional national qualifying mark established two weeks earlier, and was over 31 seconds better than her previous personal best of 17:33.21 last spring. It was also 15 seconds better than the fastest time posted by a NCAA II Northwest small-college runner in the past five years.
Western hosts the 23rd annual Ralph Vernacchia Team Classic on Saturday (10 a.m.) at Bellingham's Civic Stadium.
