MONMOUTH, Ore. - Outside hitter Marlayna Geary (Sr., Tacoma/Bellarmine) posted her third straight double-double of the season with 11 kills and 11 digs, both match highs, and recorded career kill No.1,000 as Western Washington University remained unbeaten with a 25-14, 25-22, 25-12 victory over Grand Valley State University in second-day action Friday at the Western Oregon University Invitational Volleyball Tournament being held at the New P.E. Building on the WOU campus.
The 3-0 Vikings, who hit .386 as a team, also got 10 kills from Jennica McPherson (R-Fr., Seattle/Kennedy) and Emily Boerger (Jr., Marysville/Marysville-Pilchuck) had a match-high five block assists. Setter Laurie Yearout (Sr., Spokane/Lewis & Clark) contributed 31 assists, seven digs, three kills and 1 block assist. GVSU, 1-1, was led Abby Aiken with 11 kills.
"It was just an all-around steady match, one of the best I've seen," said WWU head coach Diane Flick (13th year, 252-70). "I'm just really proud of them. It was great." Geary had no errors in 21 attempts for an attack percentage of .520. She now has 1,001 career kills, becoming the 11th Viking to achieve that feat.
Except for trailing 1-0 in the second set, the Vikings were tied or led the entire match. WWU libero Samantha Hutchinson (So., University Place/Curtis), who had 10 digs, served six straight points in the third set, two of them aces.
WWU, tabbed as the Great Northwest Athletic Conference preseason coaches favorite, opened its season Thursday with victories over Florida Southern (25-19, 25-27, 25-17, 25-18) and Cal State L.A. (25-19, 25-19, 23-25, 29-31, 15-9).
The Vikings close out WOU tourney action Saturday with a 5 p.m. match against Missouri University of Science and Technology.
