Flick notches No.200 as Vikings sweep Walla Walla at CWU Invitational
Sept. 3, 2009
ELLENSBURG, Wash. - Outside hitter Megan Amundson (Jr., Stanwood) had match highs of 12 kills and 10 digs and head coach Diane Flick recorded her 200th career victory in just her 10th season as Western Washington University swept Walla Walla University, 25-13, 25-16, 25-15, in morning action Thursday to open the Central Washington University Invitational Tournament. The Vikings, ranked No.21 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll, improved to 4-1. Walla Walla dropped to 3-3. "The best part of the 200 victories is the players that I've been able to share them all with," said Flick, who has a record of 200-51 since taking over at Western in 2000 and a winning percentage of 79.7. Amundson had a 57.1 attack percentage with no errors in 21 attempts. Middle blocker Emily Jepsen (So., Kennewick/Kamiakin) had eight kills, six digs, two blocks and two service aces for the Vikings. Her aces closed out the match. Western had strong finishes in all three sets with closing runs of 16-6, 17-8 and 15-7, respectively. "We did a good job of staying steady," Flick said. "We were working on some of the details of the game and we did a good job of that especially in the latter stages of each set. But I'd like to see some better starts from us." The Vikings hit 40.0 percent as a team and held Walla Walla to 0.67. Later this afternoon (5 p.m.), Western meets BYU Hawaii. |
