BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Erika Dupree and Laura Prinsen each had 11 kills as West Texas A&M University defeated Western Washington University, 25-14, 25-17, 25-21, in the final match Saturday of the three-day, eight-team Viking Invitational Volleyball Tournament on Haggen Court at Sam Carver Gymnasium.
The Vikings, ranked No.24 in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll, fell to 7-4 with the loss. Outside hitter Marlayna Geary (Fr., Tacoma/Bellarmine Prep) led Western with nine kills.
No.7 West Texas A&M, which won the unofficial tournament championship by being the only team to go undefeated in its four matches, improved to 11-2.
The Vikings only had a significant lead in the third set, when they ran off eight straight points behind the serve of Kathryn Mertens (Jr., Olympia) to take an 8-3 lead. Western still led by three at 13-10, but the Lady Buffs scored the next four points and never trailed again. The Vikings were still down by just one at 19-18, but gave up the next four points, essentially putting the frame out of reach.
West Texas A&M controlled the first two sets. Dupree had six kills in eight attempts in the opening game as the the Lady Buffs posted a .462 attack percentage with 15 kills and three errors in 26 attempts. In the second set, West Texas A&M led wire-to-wire after scoring the first six points.
Tournament MVP Melissa Harper added seven kills for West Texas A&M, which also placed Prinsen and setter Katie Rickwartz on the all-tournament team. Geary and libero Allison Gotz (Jr., Bothell/Archbishop Murphy) were named to the team from Western.
Completing the all-tourney team were Katie Tyzuk and Kyla Richey of British Columbia, Sarah Risser and Amber Johnson of Seattle Pacific, Kady Try of Central Washington, Caelen Hiller of Grand Canyon and Danielle Reese of Western Oregon.
The Vikings open Great Northwest Athletic Conference play Thursday (7 p.m.), entertaining Saint Martin's.
