BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The 13th-ranked Western Washington University volleyball team swept Montana State Billings 3-0 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action Thursday night on WECU Court at Carver Gym.
The Vikings improved to 9-3 overall and 3-1 in GNAC play with the decisive 25-19, 25-14, 25-16 victory over MSUB (5-7, 1-2 GNAC).
Junior outside hitter Abby Phelps (Manson, WA/Chelan) recorded her 10th double-double in 12 matches this season, registering 11 kills and 17 digs.
Senior opposite Joellee Buckner (Colville, WA) also recorded 11 kills, coming on a .323 hitting percentage, and just missed the double-double with 9 digs.
Junior middle blocker Michaela Hall (Centralia, WA) capped a great week adding 11 kills and 5 blocks for the Vikings.
“I thought we stayed patient tonight, followed our game plan and got a lot of good performance from a number of players,” said 18th-year head coach Diane Flick-Williams.
“I thought Joellee (Buckner) really picked up her game tonight and had a great match,” added Flick-Williams. “And Kazlyn (Roullier) provided us an emotional lift when she came in during the second set.”
Roullier (Spokane Valley, WA/Central Valley) had 6 kills off the bench for the Vikings.
The Yellowjackets were led by 9 kills from Maddi Vigil and a match-high 23 digs from libero Izela Alvarez.
MSUB recorded 84 digs in the three-set match, but WWU still managed to hit .226 in the sweep.
After playing the its first 10 matches of the season on the road, WWU will continue its homestand next week hosting Concordia (Thursday, Sept. 28) and Western Oregon (Saturday, Sept. 30) at Carver Gym.
