No. 11 Volleyball Sweeps Alaska to Win Fifth Straight

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – Western Washington University opposite Joellee Buckner recorded a 13-kill, 20-dig double-double to lead the 11th-ranked Vikings to a three-set sweep over Alaska Fairbanks Thursday evening in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action on Alaska Airlines Court.
The Vikings extended their winning streak to a season-high five consecutive matches, improving to 12-3 overall and gained sole possession of 2nd place in the GNAC with a 6-1 league record. WWU has swept each of its last four matches. Alaska Fairbanks falls to 8-8 overall and 1-6 in GNAC play.
Buckner (Colville, WA) recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 13 kills on a scorching .480 hitting percentage, and added a match-high 20 digs in the three-game sweep.
“Joellee was a grounding force for us tonight,” said 18th-year head coach Diane Flick-Williams. “She gave us a great place to elevate from.”
Junior outside hitter Abby Phelps (Manson, WA/Chelan) just missed the double-double with 12 kills and 9 digs (.343) and junior middle blocker Michaela Hall (Centralia, WA) added 9 kills on a .353 hitting percentage.
As a team the Vikings recorded a .324 hitting percentage (44 kills, 8 errors, 111 attacks), the second-best hitting percentage performance of the season behind the .484 mark vs. Pace in the second match of the season.
Gabby Lerma led the Nanooks with 10 kills and Jenna Hickel recorded a team-high 16 digs.
WWU continues its Alaska road trip Saturday facing rival Alaska Anchorage (10-6, 5-2) at 7 pm AKT/8 pm PT. The match will be streamed online and available via the GNAC channel on several streaming devices (Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, AndroidTV).
