Oct. 24, 2009
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - A fast start fizzled for Western Washington University as it fell to University of Alaska Anchorage, 8-25, 25-19, 25-16, 25-9, on Saturday in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball match at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex. The loss snapped a four-match winning streak for the Vikings, who fell to 15-8 overall and remained third in the league standings at 8-4. Alaska Anchorage, which won its seventh straight match, improved to 17-7 overall and took over the GNAC lead at 9-2. Seattle Pacific, which was idle tonight, is second at 8-2. "We came out hot, but then things just kept getting worse," said Western coach Diane Flick. "We just didn't play very well tonight, and it was a very disappointing loss the way that we played." Outside hitter Marlayna Geary (Fr., Tacoma/Bellarmine Prep) led the Vikings with 13 kills and middle blocker Emily Jepsen (So., Kennewick/Kamiakin) had 10 kills on .318 hitting and a team-high six blocks. Two Alaska Anchorage players posted double-doubles - Jackie Matthiesen having match highs of 15 kills and 16 digs, and McKenzie Moss adding 11 kills and 12 digs. Cortney Lundberg had a match-high eight blocks for the Seawolves. Western hit .650 and held Alaska Anchorage to minus-0.36 as it easily took the first set. The Vikings got out to 4-2 leads in each of the next two sets, but both times Alaska Anchorage took over and gradually pulled away. The Seawolves ended the match by dominating the fourth set. Western finished with a hitting percentage of .119. The Vikings next entertain Seattle Pacific in a GNAC counter Saturday, Oct. 31 (7 p.m.) on Haggen Court at Sam Carver Gymnasium. |
