BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Outside hitter Siri Wuotila (So., Seattle/Highline) had a match-high 14 kills to lead four Vikings in double-figure kills as Western Washington Unviersity defeated Western Oregon University, 30-21, 30-24, 30-21, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball match Saturday on Haggen Court at Sam Carver Gymnasium.
The Vikings improved to 16-9 overall and 11-5 in the GNAC with their third consecutive victory, and complete their home schedule 8-2 at Carver Gym.
Western Oregon fell to 10-14 overall and 8-8 in conference play. Outside hitter Stacey Bennett led the Wolves with 13 kills and middle blocker Laura Sakala added 12.
It was the last home game for three Western Washington seniors - right-side hitter Krystal Knight (Sumner), outside hitter Jamie Petersen (Kent/Kentwood) and setter Kristen Urdahl (Spokane/Ferris). Petersen had 12 kills, 15 digs and three aces.
"Tonight's match was dedicated to our seniors by the whole team, and they followed through with that promise to do it for them," said Western coach Diane Flick. "We played balanced, inspired volleyball. We were playing for our teammates, so it was easy to get fired up."
Middle blocker Tiana Roma (R-Fr., Edmonds/Edmonds-Woodway) had 12 kills and three blocks for the Vikings, and Lindsey Signer (So., Stanwood) had 10 kills. Libero Courtney Schneider (So., Snohomish) had 34 digs, and Katie Robinson (So., Everson/Nooksack Valley) had five service aces.
The Vikings used late runs to break away in the first two games, scoring seven straight points, including two Robinson aces, to take a 25-18 lead in the first game, then having a 7-2 run in the second game that put them up 29-22. The third game was not as tight, with Western Washington jumping to a 19-8 lead and holding on from there.
The Vikings conclude their season with a pair of GNAC road games in Alaska, meeting University of Alaska Fairbanks on Thursday (9 p.m. PT) and University of Alaska Anchorage on Saturday (9 p.m. PT).
