July 23, 2009
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Twelve home appearances, including four matches at its own invitational tournament in mid-September, highlight the Western Washington University 2009 volleyball schedule announced by Viking head coach Diane Flick.
Western, which plays all of its home encounters on Haggen Court at Sam Carver Gymnasium, returns four starters from last year's 21-3 team that ranked sixth nationally in attendance among NCAA Division II schools. In 2007, the Vikings won a regional title and placed second nationally.
Following season-opening tournaments at southern California on Aug. 28-29 and at Central Washington on Sept. 3-4, Western plays host to the eight-team WWU Invitational on Sept. 10-12. There the Vikings face British Columbia at 11 a.m. and Notre Dame de Namur at 7 p.m. in opening-day action Thursday. They meet Grand Canyon at 7 p.m. Friday and West Texas A&M at 7 p.m. Saturday.
All eight of Western's Great Northwest Athletic Conference home matches have 7 p.m. starts. The Vikings entertain Saint Martin's on Sept. 17, Alaska Anchorage on Sept. 24, Alaska Fairbanks on Sept. 26, Central Washington on Oct. 3, Northwest Nazarene on Oct. 8, Western Oregon on Oct. 15, Seattle Pacific on Oct. 31 and Montana State Billings on Nov. 14.
Eight league road matches complete Western's schedule. The Vikings travel to Western Oregon on Sept. 19, Seattle Pacific on Sept. 30, Saint Martin's on Oct. 10, Montana State Billings on Oct. 17, Alaska Fairbanks on Oct. 22, Alaska Anchorage on Oct. 24, Northwest Nazarene on Nov. 5 and Central Washington on Nov. 7.
The top returnees for Flick (10th year, 196-50), who is just four victories shy of career win No.200, are two juniors - libero Allison Gotz (Bothell/Archbishop Murphy) and outside hitter Megan Amundson (Jr., Stanwood). Gotz received honorable mention American Volleyball Coaches Association recognition last fall, ranking second nationally in digs per game at 6.10. Amundson was a first-team all-league pick, averaging 3.61 kills and 2.89 digs.
