Aug. 19, 2008
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University was ranked No.10 in the CBS College Sports Network/American Volleyball Coaches Association Division II Coaches Top 25 Preseason Poll released today.
The Vikings, who received one first-place vote, ranked No.2 in the final 2007 national poll after reaching the championship match at the NCAA II National Tournament.
Two starters and 10 letter winners return for coach Diane Flick (8th year, 175-47) from a squad that finished 26-5, captured its first Pacific Regional crown and took the Great Northwest Athletic Conference title for the fourth time in seven years.
Defending national champion Concordia-St. Paul is the No.1-rated team, getting the other 35 first-place votes. Pacific Regional runner-up Cal State San Bernardino was No.4. Two other Pacific Region schools in the Top 25 are UC San Diego No.22 and Chico State No.25.
Western's top returnees are senior middle blockers Angie Alvord (Laurel/Meridian) and Tiana Roma (Edmonds/Edmonds-Woodway). Roma was an honorable mention AVCA All-American last fall and Alvord was a NCAA Elite Eight and Pacific Regional Tournament all-star.
Western opens its season on the road, competing in the Cal State Monterey Bay tournament on Sept. 5-6 and taking part in the Minnesota State Duluth Classic on Sept. 12-13. The Vikings make their first appearance on Haggen Court at Sam Carver Gymnasium on Sept. 20 with a GNAC match against Montana State Billings.
This Saturday from 1-4 p.m., Western conducts a public practice at Lynden High School.
