WWU's Geary named Western Oregon tourney MVP

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University outside hitter Marlayna Geary was named Most Valuable Player at the Western Oregon University Invitational Volleyball Tournament held last weekend. Another Viking named to the seven-person all-tournament team was setter Laurie Yearout (Sr., Spokane/Lewis & Clark). Geary, a senior from Tacoma (graduate of Bellarmine High School), had 59 kills and hit for a .356 percentage in leading the Vikings to victories in all four of their matches. Geary, who had double-doubles in kills and digs in each match, also had 50 digs, five service aces and three blocks. Yearout, a senior from Spokane (graduate of Lewis & Clark High School), contributed 180 assists (12.00 average per set), 24 digs, 10 blocks, eight kills and two service aces. Also selected to the all-tourney team were Abby Aiken from Grand Valley State, Krissi Kemper from Western Oregon, Marquis Mora from Cal State L.A., Gabby Fernandez from Florida Southern, and Julie Meyer from Missouri S&T. WWU, ranked No.18 nationally in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association Coaches' Top 25 Poll, travels to Rohnert Park, Calif., this week to compete in the Sonoma State Invitational Tournament on Friday and Saturday. |
