BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University outside hitter Marlayna Geary has been named the Red Lion/Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball Offensive Player of the Week for Aug. 26-Sept. 1. Geary, a senior from Tacoma (graduate of Bellarmine High School), had 59 kills and hit for a .356 percentage in leading the Vikings to victories in all four of their matches at the Western Oregon Invitational. Geary, who had double-doubles in kills and digs in all four matches, also had 50 digs, five service aces and three blocks. In a sweep of Grand Valley State, Geary recorded her 1,000th career kill, becoming the 11th WWU player and 29th in GNAC history to reach that milestone. She now has 1,017 kills, 10th on the Vikings' career list. Receiving GNAC defensive POW honorable mention was WWU libero Samantha Hutchinson (So., University Place/Curtis), who had 90 digs as the Vikings limited the opposition to a .176 hitting percentage. WWU, ranked No.18 nationally in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association Coaches' Top 25 Poll, travels to Rohnert Park, Calif., this week to compete in the Sonoma State Invitational Tournament on Friday and Saturday. |
