WWU's Samantha Hutchinson named Red Lion/GNAC Defensive Player of the Week

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University libero Samantha Hutchinson has been named the Red Lion/Great Northwest Athletic Conference Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week for Sept. 8-14.
Hutchinson, a junior from University Place (graduate of Curtis High School), averaged 8.50 digs as the Vikings won three of four matches at the Sonoma State Seawolf Spike Invitational last weekend. She totaled 102 digs in 12 games.
WWU, 7-1 overall and ranked No.13 in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association/NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll, defeated Cal State Stanislaus (3-0), Chico State (3-1) and San Francisco State (3-0), before falling to No.24 Sonoma State (3-1).
Hutchinson was a second-team AVCA All-American last fall and ranked No.5 nationally in digs, averaging 6.41.
Receiving GNAC Offensive POW honorable mention was WWU middle blocker Kayla Erickson (Jr., Gig Harbor/Peninsula).
Erickson and middle blocker Emily Boerger (Sr., Marysville/Marysville-Pilchuck) were named to the Sonoma State all-tournament team.
The Vikings have a bye this week before beginning defense of their GNAC championship.
