Western returns to No.5 in AVCA Top 25
Sept. 23, 2003
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Following sweeps of two home league matches last week, the Western Washington University volleyball team moved up one spot to No.5 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association/NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll.
The 10-1 Vikings, who were ranked No.5 two weeks ago, matched their highest ranking in school history, garnering 686 points, after posting easy wins over Humboldt State and Western Oregon. Four of the top five places in the AVCA poll are occupied by teams from the Pacific Region.
UC San Diego (10-1, 872 total points), which handed Western its only loss in the Vikings' season opener at the Cal State San Bernardino Coyote Classic, remained No.1 for the third straight week. Defending national champion and preseason favorite Brigham Young-Hawaii (7-2, 818) stayed at No.2, with Cal State San Bernardino (9-2, 801) holding steady at No.3. Barry FL (7-2, 765), which was tied with Western at No.6 last week, moved past the Vikings into fourth place. No.14 Hawaii Pacific (5-2) is the only other Pacific Region team in this week's poll.
This Saturday, No.1 UC San Diego travels to No.3 Cal State San Bernardino. The Vikings, who have won 10 straight matches, are on the road to face Great Northwest Athletic Conference foes Northwest Nazarene on Thursday (6 p.m., PT) and Seattle University on Saturday (7 p.m.).
The Vikings are working on a 45-match league winning streak, the fifth longest in NCAA II history and the longest current string at that level. Western, which has won back-to-back GNAC titles, is undefeated in 40 matches since the league was formed in 2001.
