BELLINGHAM, Wash -
Western Washington University libero Samantha Hutchinson has been named the Red Lion/Great Northwest Athletic Conference Volleyball Defensive co-Player of the Week for Sept. 22-28, receiving the honor for the second time in three weeks.
Hutchinson, a junior from University Place (graduate of Curtis High School), averaged 9.00 digs (54 total) in six sets, helping hold the opposition to a .099 hitting percentage as the Vikings swept league road matches with Montana State Billings and Seattle Pacific. She had digs on 20 percent of the MSUB and SPU attacks.
Hutchinson, who was a second-team American Volleyball Coaches Association All-American last fall, ranks No.2 nationally among NCAA Division II dig leaders with a 7.00 average. Last year, she finished No.5 nationally in digs, averaging 6.41.
Receiving GNAC Offensive POW honorable mention for the second time this season was WWU middle blocker Kayla Erickson (Jr., Gig Harbor/Peninsula), who received POW honors outright four weeks ago.
Hutchinson shared this week's award with Alaska Anchorage libero Quinn Barker.
WWU, 9-1 overall and ranked No.11 in the AVCA DII Top 25 Poll, makes its first home appearances of the season this week, entertainingNorthwest Nazarene on Thursday, Oct. 3 (7 p.m.), and Central Washington on Saturday, Oct. 5 (7 p.m.), in GNAC counters at Sam Carver Gymnasium on the WWU campus.
